www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 23, 2017 53 but it took time before the physical also manifested itself. Through the first 27 and a half min- utes, it was a 7-7 contest. But two late turnovers right before halftime by the Trojans set up two touchdowns. Mon- tana scored on a quarterback sneak and threw a 13-yard scoring pass to a diving Ken MacAfee in the end zone for a 22-7 halftime cushion. After the first of those two touch- downs, cornerback/holder Ted Burg- meier threw a two-point conversion pass to Tom Domin off a bad snap on the point after try. On the next touch- down drive, Burgmeier ran 21 yards off a fake field goal attempt. The second half began with Bob Golic blocking a USC punt that Jay Case returned for a 30-yard touch- down, followed by Montana directing a drive that culminated with his sec- ond scoring toss to MacAfee. The 35-7 lead en route to the 49-19 pummeling of the Trojans remains one of the most dazzling and spec- tacular days in Notre Dame Stadium annals. The green jerseys were given to the players as souvenirs, and taken home by many parents. "We had ordered only one set for just that game," Devine said. "Then the Monday or Tuesday the next week, the team decided we should play out the rest of the year in green jerseys to lead us to the national title. "We had mothers and dads making the trip back to Notre Dame that week just so we could have jerseys for Satur- day's game." Even for the remaining road games that year, the white jerseys included green numerals. The 1977 Green Machine went on to win the national title while outscoring their final seven foes 317-70 (an average of 45-10), highlighted by the 38-10 rout of No. 1 Texas in the Cotton Bowl. One might surmise they were dressed to kill. ✦ M A R K E T P L A C E MEMORABILIA MEMORABILIA TICKETS PRAYER TO THE BLESSED MOTHER-(Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mount Carmel, fruitful vine, splendor of Heaven. Wearin' O' The Green Notre Dame's record in green jerseys since it was reintroduced during the 1977 national title season: • Under Dan Devine from 1977-80, it was 32-9-1. • Gerry Faust (1981-85) was 2-0, both times against USC (1983 and 1985). • With Lou Holtz (1986-96), the record was 1-1, winning the 1992 Sugar Bowl versus Florida but losing the 1995 Fiesta Bowl to Colorado. • The lone time it was worn under Bob Davie (1997-2001) was the 1999 Gator Bowl versus Georgia Tech, a 35-28 Irish loss. • The Tyrone Willingham (2002-24) era began with an 8-0 ledger before he opted to wear green for the 2002 Boston College game that resulted in a 14-7 defeat. Contrary to 1977, green was beginning to be perceived as "bad luck" for the Irish. • With Charlie Weis (2005-09), Notre Dame was 1-2, with a 34-31 loss in the epic 2005 clash with No. 1 USC. A four-game losing streak in green was finally snapped with a 41-9 victory against Army in the 2006 home finale. The green wardrobe was used one more time by Weis against USC in 2007 — the 30th anniversary of the original — but resulted in a 38-0 loss. • Brian Kelly's Irish have never worn green at home and mainly donned the color in the Shamrock Series. They are 5-1, with the loss occurring at Michigan in 2011. The overall record in green since 1977 is 41-15-1 (.728). — Lou Somogyi
