Rec Hall was booming throughout the match, as a season-high 4,610 fans 2lled the stands. The Nittany Lions put on an impressive show, as they totaled 49 kills on a .394 hitting percentage, and added 41 digs and six team blocks to hold Michigan to just .215 hitting and only 31 kills. Simone Lee led the way with 15 kills for the Lions. She hit .393 on the evening and added 2ve digs and two blocks. The Nittany Lions were 17-1 overall and 7-1 in Big Ten play heading into an Oct. 20-21 road trip to Purdue and Indiana. As of mid-October, their only loss on the season was to Nebraska, 3-0, on Sept. 22 at Rec Hall. WOMEN'S SOCCER Lions defeat Maryland in overtime match It took nearly 95 minutes, but 13th- ranked Penn State was able to capture a 1-0 road victory against Maryland on Oct. 15. Sophomore Laura Freigang net- ted the lone goal of the a4ernoon a4er 94 minutes, 2 seconds of play. With the win, Penn State improved to 10-3-2 overall and 6-1-2 in the Big Ten. More important, the Nittany Lions moved to within one point of Ohio State for the top spot in the Big Ten standings with two matches remaining. Against Maryland, the Lions had a 15-1 advantage in shots and 6-1 edge in shots on goal. They were 2nally able to 2nd the back of the net on Freigang's second game-winning goal of the season. She also brought home a Penn State victory in a 1-0 double-overtime outing against Illinois on Sept. 17 at Je3rey Field. FIELD HOCKEY Terrapins upend PSU in double overtime No. 6 Penn State battled No. 16 Mary- land for 86 minutes before succumbing to a double-overtime goal that sealed a 2-1 victory for the host Terrapins on Oct. 15. The Nittany Lions' loss was only its third of the season, as they fell to 12-3 overall and 4-2 in Big Ten play. The last time Penn State lost in double overtime was on Oct. 15, 2004, vs. Iowa, as the Hawkeyes walked away with a 2-1 win. ■ N O T E B O O K
