www.BLUEANDGOLD.com OCT. 30, 2017 15 UNDER THE DOME 80 Years Ago: Oct. 30, 1937 For the second consecutive week, Notre Dame All-American end Chuck Sweeney makes the difference on special teams, this time in the 7-6 upset win at reigning national champion and No. 4-ranked Minnesota. The Golden Gophers score their touchdown in the second quarter, but Sweeney blocks the extra point to keep the Irish ahead. A week earlier at Navy, Sweeney tackled the Midshipmen's punter in the end zone for a safety in the fourth quarter that resulted in a 9-7 Irish conquest. Three weeks later at Northwestern, Sweeney would block a punt that he would return for a touch- down in a 7-0 win. 55 Years Ago: Oct. 27, 1962 For the fourth consecutive year, No. 3 Northwestern defeats Notre Dame, 35-6, behind the leadership of dynamic Wildcats' head coach Ara Parseghian, the first coach in the 20th century to go 4-0 versus the Fighting Irish (Nick Saban would be the next in January 2013). A week earlier, Northwestern had toppled Woody Hayes' No. 6 Ohio State Buckeyes in Columbus (18-14), and the 29-point thrashing of Notre Dame — the highest margin of victory for either school in the 32 games played — elevates Northwestern to No. 1 in the Associated Press poll. For Parseghian and the United States, it was a harrowing week because of the Cuban Missile Crisis and threat of nuclear war that sees Cuba deploy 72 nuclear-armed ballistic missiles capable of wiping out the United States. "We've generated all this enthusiasm and interest in the football season, and off a sudden it is re- placed by what was happening with the risk of potential atomic war," recalled Parseghian in a 1997 interview with Blue & Gold Illustrated. "… That was a very significant point in history. We had just come off a great win at Ohio State, now we're preparing for Notre Dame, and all of a sudden you're saying, 'Hey, we might not even have a field to play on.'" Having served in World War II, Parseghian discussed with his players the gravity of the situation while trying to maintain a calm influence. "Sometimes you see where kids will put glamour to it, but there's no glamour in war if you've actu- ally been in it," he said. On the day of the game, Soviet Union prime minister Nikita Khruschev and United States President John F. Kennedy agree that the Soviet Union will withdraw its missiles, while Kennedy pledges not to invade Cuba and also remove 15 Jupiter missiles in Turkey. 40 Years Ago: Oct. 29, 1977 One week after Notre Dame's 49-19 romp over No. 5 USC elevates the Irish to the No. 5 spot, the Fighting Irish defeat Navy 43-10 — the first time it tallies at least 40 points in back-to-back games in four years, and only the second time in seven. Quarterback Joe Montana completes 11 of 24 passes that total 260 yards, with half the yardage compiled by All-America tight end Ken MacAfee on five catches. Five Years Ago: Oct. 27, 2012 No. 5 Notre Dame outscores No. 8 Okla- homa 17-0 in the final 5:05 to pull off a 30- 13 victory in Norman, where the Sooners had been a remarkable 79-4 in head coach Bob Stoops' 14 seasons. Sophomore quarterback Everett Golson completes 13 of 25 passes for 177 yards and adds 64 yards on 11 rushing attempts, and Cierre Wood's 62-yard touchdown run in the first half propels a 215-yard rushing effort. On defense, linebacker Manti Te'o continues his bid for the Heisman Trophy with his late fourth- quarter interception, his fifth of the season. The 8-0 Irish improve their all-time record versus Oklahoma to an amazing 9-1 — and start gaining more believers after going through a school record five straight seasons (2007-11) with a minimum of five defeats and compiling a 32-31 mark overall. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Oct. 27-Nov. 2 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED PO Box 2331 Durham, NC 27702 www.BlueGoldOnline.com 1-800-421-7751 DELIVERY LIMITED TO CONTINENTAL U.S. PLEASE ADD SALES TAX FOR ITEMS SHIPPING TO: (NC 7.5%, IN 7%, MI 6%) GRILL MAT $49.95 + FREE S&H Available in 2 Styles: ND or Leprechaun (Item #6622-ND or #6622-LEP) (Item #6621) CUSTOM GRILL COVERS Hand-made in the USA using the finest commercial grade vinyl.
