www.BLUEANDGOLD.com NOV. 13, 2017 15 UNDER THE DOME 60 Years Ago: Nov. 16, 1957 The greatest upset in Notre Dame football history is achieved when the 19- to 21-point underdog Irish end Oklahoma's NCAA-record 47-game winning streak with the 7-0 victory in Norman. The unranked Irish were coming off 20-6 and 34-6 losses to Navy and Michigan State, respectively, and were crushed 40-0 by the Sooners a year earlier (the worst home defeat to this day in Notre Dame Stadium). On the day Oklahoma is celebrating the 50th anniversary of its statehood, Notre Dame puts together one of its most famous drives ever in the fourth quarter — 80 yards on 20 plays (19 rushes) that take 9:01 and is capped by halfback Dick Lynch's three-yard sweep on fourth-and-goal with 3:50 remaining. Quarterback Bob Williams, who called all the plays during the game-winning drive, also intercepts Okla- homa's last pass toward the end zone in the closing seconds. 45 Years Ago: Nov. 11, 1972 The Townsend brothers lead a 21-7 win at Air Force. Defensive back Mike Townsend intercepts a school- record three passes, while brother Willie catches a 23-yard pass to set up Notre Dame's first touchdown and tallies the second on a 13-yard pass from Tom Clements to give the Irish a 14-0 halftime lead. 40 Years Ago: Nov. 12, 1977 Trailing 17-7 at the start of the fourth quarter in Death Valley versus No. 15 Clemson, No. 5 Notre Dame rallies to a 21-17 victory when quarterback Joe Montana sneaks in for two short touchdowns. Despite the comeback on the road against a top-15 team — one of the more underrated victories in school history — the Irish drop one spot to No. 6 in the ensuing Associated Press poll. 30 Years Ago: Nov. 14, 1987 For the first time in seven years, Notre Dame wins eight games (8-1) after a 37-6 thrashing at home of No. 10 Alabama, which had defeated the Irish 28-10 a year earlier. The No. 7-ranked Irish rush for 348 yards, with junior Mark Green and freshman Ricky Watters tallying on 74- and 75-yard runs in the fourth quarter. In his final home game, wideout Tim Brown catches four passes for 114 yards. 25 Years Ago: Nov. 14, 1992 With 20 seconds left in the "Snow Bowl," Jerome Bettis catches a three-yard touch- down pass from Rick Mirer on fourth down, and Reggie Brooks makes the diving grab of the two-point conversion to lift No. 8 Notre Dame past No. 22 Penn State, 17-16. This is the lone Senior Day victory for the Irish from 1990-93, a stretch where the Irish were 40-8-1. 20 Years Ago: Nov. 15, 1997 The 4-5 Fighting Irish not only upset No. 11 LSU 24-6 in another "Death Valley," but in the process become the only Notre Dame team ever to this day to play a game where it commits neither a turnover nor a penalty. First-year head coach Bob Da- vie's troops race to a 17-0 first-quarter lead and expand the advantage to 24-0 midway through the third quarter. By the start of the fourth quarter, the stands are more than half empty. Irish running backs Autry Denson and Clement Stokes rush for 92 yards apiece. 10 Years Ago: Nov. 10, 2007 For the first time in its 120-year history, Notre Dame loses its ninth game in a season after a 41-24 defeat at home to Air Force. The Irish finish the year 3-9. — Lou Somogyi Anniversaries In Notre Dame Football History: Nov. 10‑16 Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom Rachel DaDamio — Cross Country The junior from Bloomfield Village, Mich., finished in 18th place at the ACC Champi- onships Oct. 27 in Louis- ville, Ky.
