UNDER THE DOME Bouncing Back From Injuries Everett Golson Golson was withheld from action in the Oct. 13 victory against Brigham Young as a precaution fol- lowing a concussion suffered a week earlier, but he was 100 percent cleared to play at Oklahoma. After passing cognitive tests administered by the Notre Dame sophomore quarterback Everett medical staff on the Tuesday before the BYU game, Golson was given the green light to participate in the team practices. However, in addition to the concussion, Golson had battled other injuries as well, including turf toe. "He took reps, but the reps that he took were really more of seven-on-seven … and we really haven't run him physically like he would in a game situation," head coach Brian Kelly explained. On the Monday before the Oklahoma game, Golson went through a physical exertion test and performed well, enabling Kelly to state that the youngster would start against the Sooners In other injury news: • Fifth-year senior John Goodman, who has been dealing with a back issue, could have played against BYU, but Notre Dame's second-half game plan in which it ran the ball 24 times out of 27 plays required bigger bodies, including senior tight end Tyler Eifert split wide and 6-4, 215-pound ju- nior wideout Daniel Smith also blocking. • Junior cornerback Bennett Jackson suffered a neck strain against BYU, but was expected to be available versus the Sooners. • Freshman safety Nick Baratti tweeted after the BYU game that he dislocated his shoulder on a special teams play. When asked about his status, Kelly responded: "He doesn't get to use Twitter next week." The subluxation was stabilized, and he went back into the game. • Senior kicker Nick Tausch is working through a hip flexor that turned out to be more serious than Golson was avaiable to start for the Fighting Irish at Oklahoma after sitting out in the BYU contest due to a concussion he suffered a week before against Stanford. PHOTO BY BILL PANZICA initially thought back in early September, but Kelly said Tausch is stronger now and still could play this year if needed.
