"I couldn't be more proud of this team today for this victory, for winning this championship," coach Erica Dambach said. "Obviously, it means a ton for the program, it means an automatic bid to our 23rd consecutive NCAA tourna- ment, which we are very proud of as a program and especially for this senior class. They deserve it and they worked really hard for it." The Nittany Lion o5ense broke through with less than 20 minutes to go in regulation, as Maddie Elliston swung the ball into the box and Laura Freigang headed home her 46h goal of the season to tie the score at 1-1. Almost eight minutes later, the Nit- tany Lions found themselves in front for the 4rst time on Haleigh Echard's sec- ond goal of the year. Alina Ortega Jurado found Echard about 30 yards from goal and then she moved up a few yards be- fore 4ring a right-footed shot from just outside the penalty area into the back of the net. Five days later, Penn State (13-4-4) opened the NCAA tournament with a 7- 0 victory over Stony Brook at Je5rey Field. Freigang, a sophomore mid4elder from Oppenheim, Germany, scored three goals for the 21st hat trick in the pro- gram's history. The Nittany Lions ad- vanced to face Wake Forest in a second-round game Nov. 17. FIELD HOCKEY Connecticut outlasts Lions in NCAA quarterfinals With a trip to the Final Four on the line, sixth-ranked Penn State put up a valiant e5ort against No. 1 Connecticut before falling, 4-3, on Nov. 12 at the Sherman Complex in Storrs, Conn. Penn State ended its season at 17-5 overall. "If we had taken care of the ball a little better around the 25, we might have got- ten a di5erent result," coach Charlene Morett-Curtiss said. "I love the way our kids competed today. I thought they played with a lot of intensity and obvi- ously a lot of heart. Connecticut is a very solid team, and they got some great looks in front of the cage and put just one more in than we did." Abby Myers cut Connecticut's two- goal lead in half in the 56th-minute when her shot went o5 a Huskies de- N O T E B O O K
