The renovated Yost Ice Arena has amazed fans, players and coaches alike this season, finally match- ing the excellence achieved by the Wolverines during head coach Red Berenson's 29 seasons. larger concourses and improved concessions, new bleacher seats, greater hand- icap accessibility, the introduction of luxury boxes on the west side and a new press box. Bricks covering the windows were removed, with glass panes going up to create natural light that floods into the arena during afternoon practices. Michigan's coaches offices for hockey and men's soccer have also been im- LIKE NEW C LOOKS Yost Ice Arena Has Undergone Major Renovations BY MICHAEL SPATH • PHOTOS BY LON HORWEDEL onverted from a field house into an ice rink in 1973, Yost Ice Arena has received facelifts before — in 1992, 1997, 2001, 2006 and just last season — but nothing like this. The old barn has been renovated from top to bottom, and it looks like a brand-new arena inside the famed brick structure that has stood on State Street since 1923. Using a $14 million budget, Yost was upgraded in almost every way, with 108 THE WOLVERINE NOVEMBER 2012 proved, with new carpeting, painting and décor. Yost has always been a great place to watch a game, with an environment perhaps unmatched in college hockey thanks to knowledgeable, passionate fans, and the new amenities provide an even greater viewing experience for the loyal patrons that attend every Friday and Saturday night home affair. u Michigan removed the clutter from its con- courses and updated its retro-1970s wood- paneling façade with a modern look.
