PSU picks up legacy recruit Son of former Nittany Lion tailback chooses father's alma mater RYAN SNYDER | B L U E WH I T E I L L U S T R A T E d The impact of the White Out crowd against Ohio State is already being felt on the recruiting trail. After visiting Penn State last week, Thomas John- son running back Richy Anderson of Frederick, Md., has verbally committed to Bill O'Brien and his staff. The son of former Nittany Lion tail- back Richie Anderson, the 5-foot-11, 180-pound three-star prospect took an official visit to Penn State this past weekend and was apparently blown away with the Beaver Stadium atmos- phere. "Last night, I won't lie, I almost had tears at one point just imagining what it would be like to be out there," An- derson said on Sunday. "To be part of something like that, I honestly can't describe it. I took a bunch of pictures of everything and I was looking at it all as I was driving home, just thinking about more than just the environ- ment, more than just football, but the entire town, the school and what it means to be part of this team right now. "It's just a different environment up there. Anyone that knows Penn State knows that it's about more than just football. It really is, and you can tell that. When they got down [against Ohio State], no one left, everyone sup- ported the team. So, I mean, I just love it up there." He initially called Larry Johnson, his recruiting coach, to tell the staff about his decision. "I talked to everybody," Anderson said. "I called Coach Johnson immedi- ately, and he was real excited, so then I talked to Coach [Charles] London and then I spoke with Coach O'Brien last before I got off the phone. "Everyone is real excited. My family is real excited. I'll be honest, my phone is blowing up with media and friends right now, so it's a big day for me. I'm real excited to be part of this." Before his commitment to Penn LIKE FATHER, LIKE SON Anderson will follow in the footsteps of his father, Richie Anderson, and play running back for the Nittany Lions. He chose the Terra- pins in June but began to reconsider his options after the Nittany Lions of- fered a scholarship in late August. He becomes the 12th verbally com- mitted prospect in Penn State's Class of 2013 and the first running back re- cruit since Akeel Lynch joined last year's class. Anderson plans to enroll in January, joining defensive back Jordan Smith of Washington, D.C., and tight end Adam Breneman of Camp Hill, Pa.
