14 JANUARY 2018 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED UNDER THE DOME NOTRE DAME MOVES 2018 SYRACUSE HOME GAME TO YANKEE STADIUM The Nov. 17, 2018 Notre Dame-Syracuse game originally scheduled to be Senior Day at Notre Dame Stadium will instead be played at New York's Yankee Stadium as the Shamrock Series game for the Fighting Irish. Yankee Stadium also hosted the 2010 Shamrock Series in head coach Brian Kelly's first season, a 27-3 victory against Army. The Irish played again in the venue in the 2013 Pinstripe Bowl, a 29-16 win versus Rutgers. The Shamrock Series was a yearly event for the Irish from 2009-16, but experienced a hiatus in 2017 with the opening of the Campus Crossroads in Notre Dame Stadium. Syracuse last visited Notre Dame Stadium on Nov. 22, 2008, when the 2-8 Orange — which had just fired head coach Greg Robinson — stunned the Irish 24-23 to knock them out of a Gator Bowl bid. The two most recent meetings between the schools in football were at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., in 2014 and 2016, with the Irish winning by 31-15 and 50-33 scores, respectively. The Orange stunned current No. 1 Clemson 27-24 this season to improve to 4-3, but failed to win thereafter and finished 4-8. Because of the switch, Notre Dame will play four of its last five games on the road while traveling to big-city venues at San Diego (Navy) and Chicago (Northwestern), before hosting Florida State and then closing at New York City and Los Angeles. Notre Dame and Syracuse last met in the old Yankee Stadium on Thanksgiving Day 1963 (Nov. 28), a 14-7 win by the Orange. THREE HOME NIGHT GAMES IN 2018 From the start of Notre Dame's NBC television contract for home games in 1991 through head coach Brian Kelly's first season in 2010, Notre Dame did not host any night games. That ended with the 2011 USC game. By 2015, the Fighting Irish hosted two night games, and by 2016 it was up to three. It will be three again next season with 7:30 p.m. ET starting times versus Michigan (Sept. 1), Stanford (Sept. 29) and Florida State (Nov. 10), with the latter the 25th anniversary of the No. 1 versus No. 2 showdown between the Irish and Seminoles, almost to the day (Nov. 13, 1993). The Notre Dame agreement with NBC Sports features the option of five night games over each two-year window. NBC showed two night games from Notre Dame Stadium in 2017 — Georgia and USC — so the network is allowed three prime-time contests in 2018. Times for the other three home games also have been released: Sept. 8 Ball State (3:30 p.m.), Sept. 15 Vanderbilt (2:30 p.m.) and Oct. 13 Pittsburgh (2:30 p.m.). The Shamrock Series outing ver- sus Syracuse in New York's Yankee Stadium (Nov. 17), likewise telecast by NBC, will have a 2:30 p.m. kickoff. The five remaining road game starting times will be determined later. 2020 SCHEDULE RELEASED On Dec. 7, Notre Dame officially released its 2020 football schedule that will have six home games and the Shamrock Series versus Wiscon- sin at Green Bay's Lambeau Field. The top talking points include: • Opening with Navy for the first time since the 12-1 campaign in 2012. • The first meeting ever against the University of Arkansas, which will be the second game of the season. • Playing in four NFL Stadiums: MetLife (Navy), Bank of America in Charlotte, N.C. (Wake Forest), Lam- beau (Wisconsin) and Heinz Field (Pitt), not to mention the temporary home of the Los Angeles Rams with the trip to the Los Angeles Coliseum.
