he new early signing period in Divi-
sion I football was set to take place
Dec. 20-22, and with just over a
week to go until it began, James Franklin
and his coaching sta4 were in a position
that most of their regional rivals could
only envy.
Despite being forced to part ways with
safety Isheem Young of Philadelphia and
o4ensive lineman Antwan Reed of
Muskegon, Mich., both of whom are
four-star prospects, Penn State was still
expected to sign at least 20 prospects
during that three-day window, clearing
the way for Franklin and his assistants to
focus on just a handful of elite prospects
to 3nish o4 what is expected to be the
program's best class in more than a
decade.
The coaches took a big step in the right
direction about 10 days before the early
