M . | D E C . 3 1 | B R Y C E J O R D A N C E N T E R | B T N | Penn State's .rst Big Ten home game of the season is a New Year's Eve matinee against Maryland. The Terrapins have claimed the past three conference tournament championships and have won or shared the regular-season crown in each of those years as well, so this game will serve as a measuring stick for the Lady Lions. Thanks to standout players like sophomore guards Kaila Charles and Blair Watson, the Terps are looking like serious threats to make it four in a row. Their only nonconference losses as of this writing were to defending national champion South Carolina (94- 86) and Connecticut (97-72). Charles was eighth in the conference in scoring with an average of 18.3 points per game and 10th in rebounding at 8.3 boards per game, while Watson was averaging 3.3 3-pointers per game to rank second. With that kind of .re- power, Maryland is going to be a huge challenge for a youthful Penn State team that is looking to re-establish itself as part of the Big Ten's upper echelon. The Lady Lions have won eight regular-season titles to rank third all-time (only Ohio State and Iowa have more), but the Terps are catching up fast. – M.H. SCORECARD
