UNDER THE DOME TOP OF THE CLASS Irish student-athletes excelling on the field and in the classroom ran earned her first All-Big East recognition at the conference championship meet Oct. 26. The Illinois native took 12th overall to lead her team to a fifth-place finish in the Bronx, N.Y. Curran also had Notre Dame's fastest time at last year's NCAA Championships with a time of 21:09.8. She was one of Notre Dame's top two runners in each race this fall. Kelly Curran — Jr., Cross Country With one of the top finishes of her career, Cur- hardt helped christen Notre Dame's new Castel- lan Family Fencing Center in the Joyce Center. He defeated Ohio State's Chris Colley 14-5 in the foil to help the Irish knock off the defending na- tional champion Buckeyes in their first meet of the school year. He was a member of the U.S. foil team in London that finished fourth overall at the Summer Olympics. Gerek Meinhardt — Sr., Fencing One of several Fighting Irish Olympians, Mein- make the cut on the Big East Weekly Honor Roll. The senior racked up 22 kills and 10 blocks during the final week of October while helping Notre Dame stretch its winning streak to eight matches. The Irish captain has the second-best attack percentage (.387) in the conference this fall, and she is third on her team with 2.11 kills per set. Hilary Eppink — Sr., Volleyball Eppink is the fifth Irish player this season to beating Ohio State's Kyjah Coryat and Mona Shaito in the foil. She and teammate Madison Zeiss were Notre Dame's only two double-win- ners in an exhibition win over Ohio State. She ranked as the No. 4 foilist in the world on the senior level after winning the North American Cup in January. She was also a member of the U.S. Olympic team in August.
