JANUARY 2018 THE WOLVERINE 9 BY ANDREW VAILLIENCOURT O n Dec. 14, the Learfield Direc- tors' Cup updated fall standings were released, and Michigan was No. 2 overall, with 269.5 total points. The Directors' Cup awards overall excellence in athletic departments, with points awarded based on the national finish of each school's men's and women's teams. Each school can count 10 sports for each gender. The overall winner will be an- nounced in late June once the base- ball season is over. Currently, Stanford is in first place with 385 points. There's a bigger dif- ference between Stanford and Michi- gan at No. 1 and No. 2 than there is between No. 2 Michigan and No. 17 Louisville. This is due to Stanford's men's and women's soccer teams each winning the national title. Michigan is one of seven Big Ten teams ranked in the top 35. Penn State comes in at No. 4, Wisconsin at No. 9, Michigan State at No. 12, Indi- ana at No. 21, Northwestern at No. 33 and Maryland at No. 35. UCLA is at No. 3 and North Caro- lina at No. 5 to round out the top five. The six completed fall sports that are already in the standings are men's and women's cross country, men's and women's soccer, men's water polo and women's field hockey. Michigan does not have a men's water polo team, and its women's soccer team did not earn any points after ending the year with a 6-6-6 record. In cross country, the women's team placed ninth to earn 69 points, while the men finished 10th to earn 67.5 Inside Michigan ATHLETICS Michigan Is Second In Fall Directors' Cup Standings The men's and women's cross country teams swept the Big Ten championships for the first time since 1993, and then both went on to post top- 10 finishes at the NCAA Championships. The men placed 10th at nationals, while the women checked in at ninth.
