Gaines talks Penn State visit Georgia DB checks out PSU for the first time since his commitment RYAN SNYDER | B L U E WH I T E I L L U S T R A T E d Grayson (Ga.) defensive back and future Nittany Lion Kasey Gaines qui- etly made the trip to State College for Penn State's game against Ohio State on Oct. 27. While he had seen cam- pus before, this visit afforded him his first opportunity to experience the Beaver Stadium game-day atmos- phere. "I came up with my parents on Fri- day, actually, and that allowed me to meet with Coach [Ted] Roof," Gaines said. "I was also able to go around and check out all of the facilities again, and then eventually campus and down- town. That was all real cool, but Sat- urday was great. "When we were heading up to the stadium Saturday, I spent pretty much all of my time with [fellow Penn State recruits] Adam [Breneman] and Chris- tian [Hackenberg]. They're both real cool dudes; I really enjoyed getting to know them. I also spent some time with Jordan Smith as well." Gaines had already toured University Park when he camped at Penn State in June, so this unofficial visit was cen- tered around the actual game experi- ence. "My favorite part was definitely walk- ing through the tunnel during pre- game," Gaines said. "Standing on the sidelines before kickoff and just inter- acting with everyone down there on the sidelines – that was a lot of fun. The at- mosphere was just crazy. I expected a lot, and [the game] probably exceeded those expectations. I remember a friend back at home told me that when he was watching it on TV, it looked like it was snowing up there, everything was all white. "It was just a great experience. I honestly wanted to be down there playing, but I know my time will come." Gaines noted that things on the re- cruiting front have been very quiet since his commitment to Penn State in early September. In fact, he said his in- Grayson High School RUBBING ELBOWS Gaines said he spent a lot of time with fellow Penn State recruits Adam Brene- man and Christian Hackenberg during his visit. teraction with Roof, Penn State's de- fensive coordinator, is the only sub- stantial contact that he maintains with any college coach. Gaines said it is only a matter of time before he and Roof establish a date for his official visit to Penn State. "The thing with me is that our state semifinals are Dec. 7," Gaines said. "So as much as I want to come up to Penn State, I actually hope I can't make that trip. I want to be playing still. Coach Roof told me that it won't be a big deal if I can't. I guess other guys are in that position as well, so if other guys are playing, Coach Roof said they'll proba- bly have another official visit date in January."
