November 16-19. Carrington shared: "Past participants said this would be a life- changing experience; however, I never imagined that four days could really make me look in the mirror and find my true core values and discuss how my core values were incorporated into my leadership philosophy." "Being a leader is more than just leading a group of people. It's an accumulation of different principles, which includes being relatable, admit - ting when you make mistakes and forging real au- thentic relationships. I am entirely grateful to have been a part of the NCAA Student-Athlete Leader- ship Forum in 2017 and I will make sure I continue to #LearnLead in all my endeavors going forward." Carrie Heilman was named the University's new faculty athletics representative, succeeding Car- olyn M. Callahan, a professor in the Curry School of Education, who has served in that role since 1997. Carrie officially took over the position on January 1. "I've really enjoyed the handful of op- portunities I've had over the years to be in- volved with the athlet- ics department here," she said. "So when this opportunity came up, I knew it would be a challenging role, but I thought, 'What a great opportunity to get involved with athletics again.'" The faculty athletics representative ensures that the University "es - tablishes and maintains the appropriate balance between academics and intercollegiate athletics," according to the job description, and represents the University at meetings of the Atlantic Coast Conference and the National Collegiate Athletic Associa- tion. The representative serves as the faculty liaison between the academic enterprise and the athletics department. Heilman is not unfamiliar with the institu- tional side of collegiate athletics. She previously served as the faculty athletics representative at Washington University in St. Louis, an NCAA Division III school. After joining the UVA faculty, she served on the Ath- letics Advisory Council Committee, chairing it from 2008-11, and the Athletics Transfer Ap- peals Committee. Carrie will be working with a new athletics director and, shortly, a new presi- dent. She's looking forward to working with the athletics staff, coaches, and especially to spending time with the student-athletes. As a former student- athlete and now the parent of budding stu- dent-athletes, she understands the pressures of balancing a full-time academic load and pursu- ing athletic excellence. Heilman said she takes the office with no preconceived agenda. "I simply want to do my best to represent the University, and also to keep the student-athlete in mind, always, first and foremost," she said.
