THE LATEST UPDATING EVENTS IN THE SANDUSKY CASE NOV. 1 Citing "a conspiracy of si- lence," Pennsylvania state prosecu- tors charge former Penn State pres- ident Graham Spanier with perjury, obstruction of justice and endan- gering the welfare of children who were abused by convicted child mo- lester Jerry Sandusky. NOV. 1 Prosecutors also bring new felony charges – endangering the welfare of children, obstruction of justice and conspiracy – against re- tired Penn State administrator Gary Schultz and former athletic director Tim Curley. Schultz and Curley were charged with perjury in No- vember 2011. NOV. 7 Spanier is arraigned and re- leased on $125,000 bail after being charged with lying about and con- cealing sexual abuse allegations against Sandusky. Spanier doesn't enter a formal plea, but his attor- ney, Elizabeth Ainsile, tells re- porters that her client is "not guilty, absolutely." NOV. 13 Court officials announce that the preliminary hearing for Spainer, Curley and Schultz will take place at 9 a.m. Dec. 13 in the Dauphin County Courthouse. NOV. 13 Updated figures released by the university show that Penn State's costs stemming from the Sandusky fallout have reached near- ly $21 million. That figure includes the latest invoices the university has received for legal services, PR firms and consultants. NOV. 14 Pennsylvania Auditor Gener- al Jack Wagner recommends that Penn State remove the university president and state governor as vot- ing members of the board and cut the board's size from 32 to 21 so that power can be shared more evenly among members. BLOGS OPINIONS With the majority of the team returning, coupled with Cham- bers and his staff's relentless recruiting approach, Penn State should be primed to take the next step toward being a legiti- mate contender in the Big Ten. SAM COOPER ONWARD STATE THE MONTH I N. . . For all of the success of the last two seasons, Penn State [wrestling] has tasted defeat each year. Iowa beat Penn State in Rec Hall two years ago, and Minnesota surprised the Nittany Lions at home last season. Penn State will be prohibitive fa- vorites in all of the home duals this year but has three road duals that could be problematic, with trips to Illinois and Ohio State and an especially intriguing matchup at Iowa on Feb. 1. Time will tell if Sanderson can notch his first undefeated dual season this year. The question after one year drifts in from the new administra- tion's willingness to absorb the scathing admonitions in the suspect Freeh Report and the preposterous non-jurisdictional sanctions administered by Emmert's avenging NCAA without a peep of protest. Is there something else? Penn State might have lost the moral authority to defend itself, but is it failing to defend itself in even some practical sense because it knows the worst revelations are yet to come? GENE COLLIER PITTSBURGH POST-GAZETTE Just because O'Brien would not deny interest when ques- tioned on Tuesday doesn't mean much. Major-college and pro coaches have it drilled into their heads by agents to never say they won't consider a job. In a business that's as cutthroat as it gets, you always are taught to keep doors ajar. Sooner or later, it becomes reflexive to say, "I'm flattered to be consid- ered," rather than "I'm not going anywhere." Even when you know you're probably not going anywhere. DAVID JONES THE (HARRISBURG) PATRIOT-NEWS QUOTES I've tried almost everything you can possibly think of. I've dressed up as Mike Mauti. I've handed out Big Macs. I've taught classes. I've done pep rallies. I've done everything that has been asked of me, and then some. So you hope [fans] come out because you're building a relationship with them. I've been in the HUB shaking hands and our team has done the same. Now, we have to win games. PATRICK CHAMBERS ON HIS EFFORTS TO BUILD PENN STATE'S BASKETBALL FAN BASE JEFF BYERS STATECOLLEGE.COM
