Notre Dame ends school-record 19-year drought UNDER THE DOME LIFE AT THE TOP No. 1 illuminations were used again on the Notre Dame campus after the Fighting Irish football team reached the top spot with a 38-0 victory against Wake Forest Nov. 17. The following day against Boston Col- lege, Fighting Irish head coach Lou Holtz and Co. saw their bid for the national title ruined in U ntil Nov. 18, 2012, Notre Dame foot- the regular-season finale with a 41-39 defeat on the game's final play. Since the advent of the the longest drought be- tween No. 1 rankings in the program's history, nearly doubling the 10 years from October 1954 under first-year head coach Terry Brennan un- til November 1964 with first Associated Press poll in 1936, Brian Kelly became the ninth differ- ent Notre Dame head coach to experience ris- ing to the top during the regular season. This in- cludes interim coach Ed McKeever in 1944.
