A Yahoo Sports news report in late February tied some of the biggest college basketball programs and some of their most prominent players to NBA agent Andy Miller and his agency, ASM Sports. Although Penn State was not named specifically, former All-Big Ten guard D.J. Newbill was mentioned in docu- ments that were cited in the report. The documents stated that Newbill had re- ceived a loan of $2,000 from the agency. Asked on his weekly teleconference about the Yahoo story – whether the program had any connection to ASM, or if he had any knowledge of the loan – Penn State head coach Patrick Cham- bers said he would need to hold o2 on further comment. The next day, a team spokeswoman provided the following statement from Chambers: "I have no connection or association with Andy Miller or his agency. The University is looking into the informa- tion released on Friday. As I have stated, this program is committed to doing things the right way." According to Yahoo Sports, the report encompasses "hundreds of pages of documents from the years-long probe that had federal authorities monitoring multiple targets and intercepting more than 4,000 calls across 330 days." It identi1es Duke, Michigan State, North Carolina, Southern Cal, Texas and oth- ers as having players who may have re- ceived impermissible bene1ts under NCAA rules. In Newbill's case, what is not identi- 1ed is the date of the loan's issuance. The document is dated Dec. 31, 2015. That same year, he 1nished his playing career and graduated from Penn State. A loan from an agent following the expira- tion of his eligibility would not violate any NCAA rules. Newbill transferred to Penn State in 2011 a3er spending his freshman year at Southern Mississippi. He went on to be- come one of the program's top scorers in three seasons of action with the Nittany Lions, 1nishing with 1,812 career points to rank fourth all-time. He is only the second player in the program's history to score 500-plus points in three consecu- tive seasons. Newbill was not dra3ed following his college career but played for the Los An- geles Clippers in the NBA Summer League in 2015, averaging 10.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 2.8 steals in four games. He has since played profes- sionally in France, Turkey, Belgium and New Zealand. He is currently playing for the New Zealand Breakers, a team based in Auckland that competes in the Na- tional Basketball League, which is made up mostly of Australian teams. As of early March, Newbill was the Breakers' second-leading scorer at 13.6 points per game. –NATE BAUER M E N ' S B A S K E T B A L L Chambers: 'I have no connection or association' with agency D.J.
