F O O T B A L L Galt: Winter was 'the best one we've had so far' Penn State is a program with national championship dreams and a roster full of high-achievers. But it's a long off- season, and every team has a bad day or two in the weight room or the practice field. At least that's been Dwight Galt's ex- perience in nearly three decades as a strength and conditioning coach, first at Maryland and Vanderbilt and now with the Nittany Lions. "Every now and then, at any place I've been – less here than anywhere else – there always comes a time where you say, 'Eh, they were just kind of flat today,' " Galt said. "But I haven't had one of those days all year. The consistency of just grinding at the level that they always grind at has been the best part of this winter." Galt has now overseen five years of winter workouts as Penn State's director of performance enhancement, and he described the one that the Nittany Lions just completed as the best he's seen since arriving in University Park in 2014. "We've always had great winters," he said, "but I think this one kind of takes the place of the best one we've had so far, and it's our fifth one here, so it's been really good." The Lions performed 32 workouts be- ginning in January and extending through early March. Galt likes to mix weight training with a movement pro- gram featuring running drills at Holuba Hall. It's an unconventional approach, but Galt is con- vinced of its efficacy.
