Maryland is coming o8 a season in which it claimed its third NCAA crown and 7rst since 1975. The Terps had 7nished as runners-up in four of the previous six seasons, so their victory in the championship game was a long- awaited breakthrough. Along the way to their title, they posted two victories over Penn State: a 15-11 win at College Park during the regular season and an 8-6 squeaker in a rematch at the Big Ten tournament a month later. The 2018 team was ranked sec- ond nationally as of mid-March, thanks in large part to returning All-American Con- nor Kelly, who had 15 goals and 19 assists in the season's 7rst six games. Penn State will prep for its matchup with the Terps by taking on last year's NCAA runner-up, Ohio State. The Nittany Lions will face the Buckeyes, ranked 14th as of this writing, in Columbus on March 31. Hoping to qualify for the NCAA tournament for the second season in a row, Penn State will have a chance to make its case in the coming weeks. A win over the Buckeyes or the Terrapins would de7nitely open some eyes. –M.H. ADMINISTRATION Messina to oversee athletic training services Longtime athletic trainer Renee Messina has been named assistant athletic director for athletic training services. Messina is a Penn State graduate who has been a member of the Nittany Lions' athletic training sta8 since 1992, serving in a variety of roles and with several teams. Since 2013, she has served as associate director of athletic training services, su- pervising the trainers who provide the medical care for 12 varsity programs. In her new assign- ment, Messina is charged with overseeing all aspects of athletic training services for approxi- mately 800 student-athletes across 31 programs. She will direct all day- to-day athletic training activities and supervise education, rehabilitation and return-to-play protocols. Senior associate AD Charmelle Green said Messina is "an outstand- ing leader, a team player, and most importantly, she is committed to providing exceptional health care to our student-athletes." Messina will develop athletic train- ing strategies and implement policies and protocols that ensure compliance with NCAA and Big Ten Conference rules and regulations. Originally from Vinco, Pa., Messina earned a bachelor's degree in health education-athletic training option, with a minor in exercise and sport science, from Penn State. She also has a master's degree in physical ed- ucation from East Stroudsburg Uni- versity. Messina and her husband, Patrick, have a daughter, Isabella, and a son, Jack. She began her new duties in early March. ■ MESSINA SCORECARD
