APRIL 2018 THE WOLVERINE 69   MICHIGAN HOCKEY SEVERAL U-M PLAYERS HONORED BY THE BIG TEN U-M's surprising season resulted in a number of Wolverines earning postseason honors from the Big Ten. Junior forward Cooper Marody was the Big Ten scoring champion, finishing with 46 points (14 goals and 32 assists), and was named to the All-Big Ten first team. He is the third Michigan player to be the Big Ten scoring champion, joining Zach Hy- man (2015) and Kyle Connor (2016). Marody ranked 10th nationally in points and third in assists heading into the NCAA Tournament. Senior forward Tony Calderone and freshman defenseman Quinn Hughes both were named to the All- Big Ten second team. Calderone led Michigan and the Big Ten with 23 goals, which ranks eighth in the country. He tallied 40 points total, the most ever by a Mich- igan captain. Hughes recorded four goals and 24 assists to finish as the team's third- leading scorer. He also was named to the league's All-Freshman team. His 24 assists are the most ever by a Michigan freshman, and his 28 points ranked third. He had the 15th most points in the country this season out of all freshmen. Sophomore goaltender Hayden Lavigne was awarded an honorable mention. He missed out on Goalten- der of the Year, which was given to Notre Dame sophomore Cale Morris, who also won Big Ten Player of the Year over Marody. This season, Lavigne played in 30 games, starting 28, and finished with a 16-10-3 record. He had a save percentage of .910 and had a goals- against average of 2.79. He had three shutouts this year as well. Senior defenseman Sam Piazza was named Michigan's Big Ten Sportsman- ship Award honoree. It's the second straight year he's won the award. Pi- azza set a career high in games played (35), assists (13), points (15) and shots (64) this season. Piazza was also nomi- nated as a finalist for the Senior CLASS award, which recognizes student-ath- letes who excel both on and off the ice. Ohio State head coach Steve Rohlik was named Big Ten Coach of the Year over Michigan head coach Mel Pear- son. OSU was picked to finish fifth in the Big Ten this season and came in second. ❏ HOCKEY REWIND: FEB. 20-MARCH 19 Overall Record: 20-14-3 (11-10-3 in conference) Best Win — 6-5 over Wisconsin: Michigan earned the No. 3 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, meaning it would be the home team in its first-round matchup against No. 6 seed Wisconsin. After falling behind 3-1 in the first period, the Wol- verines stormed back with four consecutive power-play goals to take the lead. Senior forward Tony Calderone scored four goals in the victory. Michigan won the series 2-0, beating the Badgers again the following night 7-4. Quote: "Really happy for our seniors. It's a good way to go out, I love playoff hockey on campus. I thought the fans were entertained for two games. As a coach, maybe you don't like the game as far as the scoring goes, but for the fans it's exciting." — Michigan head coach Mel Pearson on winning the final home game of the season at Yost Ice Arena MVP — Junior forward Cooper Marody: He led the Big Ten in points this season, notching 46 on 14 goals and 32 assists. He had both of Michigan's goals against Ohio State in the Big Ten Tournament semifinals and three assists in the first-round series against Wisconsin. The Philadelphia Flyers draft pick has played extremely well on a line with se- nior forward Tony Calderone and senior forward Dexter Dancs. Freshman Impact — Freshman defenseman Quinn Hughes: He could've easily been named Michigan's MVP this season. The dynamic freshman is skilled offensively and showed that this season, recording 28 points (four goals and 24 assists) to finish the regular season third on the team in scoring. In the Big Ten Tournament, Hughes scored one goal and tallied six assists. He also produced the most scoring chances outside of Marody in the team's 3-2 overtime loss to Ohio State, but was stopped by the post on one shot and the goalie on a breakaway on another. He almost assuredly will be a top-10 pick in this year's NHL Draft. Player To Watch — Senior forward Tony Calderone: The team captain led both Michigan and the Big Ten with 23 goals, and finished the regular season as the team's second-leading scorer with 40 points. Must-See Series — March 24-25 vs. Northeastern and Cornell/Boston University: Michigan is a No. 2 seed and will played No. 3 seed Northeastern in the first round of the NCAA Tournament March 24 in Worcester, Mass. If the Wolverines won, they played the winner of Cornell and Boston in the Northeast Regional final for a chance to advance to the Frozen Four. — Andrew Vailliencourt Defenseman Quinn Hughes ranked 15th nationally among freshmen in points (28) heading into the NCAA Tournament, while his assist total (24) already represented a school record for rookies.
