Between the launch of the Annual Fund campaign, the ending of winter sports, the start of spring sports and our Spring So- cial Tour, our staff is especially active. In February, we mailed 2018 Annual Fund Renewal packets to all VAF members who made a gift in 2017. If you haven't received your package, please contact our office. As always, our Annual Fund is a critical funding source for the athlet- ics department and is the primary source of support for all scholarships for our student-athletes. This is once again an important year for our annual fundraising effort. We haven't been able to grow the An- nual Fund to keep pace with tuition increases and will need 2018 to be a really good fundraising year. Our staff often receives questions about how many donors we have in each annual giving level. Below provides a giving level breakdown of our 2017 Annual Fund do- nors. In 2017, over 500 donors increased their contribution up to the next level. We are grateful for this kind of support and hope many more of you will do the same this year. We had a very good year in 2017 raising money for endowed scholarships. One of the highlights was that we have endowed all 13 (maximum number allowed by the NCAA) men's basketball scholarships. The University's Bicentennial Scholars match- ing funds provided a significant boost to our efforts and we still have matching funds available to apply to any new endowed scholarship commitments. We would like to exhaust these matching funds by the end of this year. If you have any interest in ex- ploring this program, please contact our office. Our facility projects are progressing with the construction of the golf practice facil- ity at Birdwood Golf Course in full swing. There is a redesign underway of the ten- nis facility at the Boar's Head Sports Club that we hope will be ready to share in the coming weeks. Additionally, the softball facility has been approved by the University Board of Visitors to be built in the University Hall precinct next to Klöckner Stadium. Finally, under the leadership of new director of athletics, Carla Williams, we are working on opportunities to provide additional resources for the football program. These resources would significantly enhance the overall daily operation of the football program and would assist greatly in the recruiting and player development areas. Carla has asked our staff to emphasize support for the football program in the coming months. There are numerous ways to support the athletics program. We have long enjoyed remarkable generosity from our donor base and we hope we can continue to count on your support. We also will be working diligently to increase our donor base. Thank you for all you do to support Virginia Athletics. Sincerely, Dirk P.
