But as of this writing, the Nittany Lions were 9-4 on the season. And even though those four losses were by a combined total of 7ve goals, the Lions had tumbled to No. 19 in the poll as of early April. Twenty-six teams make the NCAA tournament, including 13 at-large quali7ers, so Penn State wouldn't necessarily miss out even if it fails to secure the Big Ten's automatic bid. The Lions certainly helped their cause by thrashing sixth-ranked Virginia, 22-13, in Charlottesville on April 6. A conference championship run would be a great way to start the postseason, but that won't be easy, as defending national champion Mary- land has been looking as strong as ever with a 12-1 record and No. 2 spot in the poll as of this writing. Also ranked in the Top 25 as of early April were Northwestern (eighth) and Big Ten a8liate member Johns Hopkins (24th). But Penn State, which has 11 freshmen on its roster, has been gaining experience and will have a chance to display its growth when it travels to face the Terrapins on April 19. –M.H. ACADEMICS PSU's winter teams excel in classroom Penn State student-athletes sur- passed another academic milestone with the announcement of the 2017- 18 winter Academic All-Big Ten re- cipients. Penn State tallied 77 winter honorees, just two shy of the all-time winter school record, and surpassed the 6,000 mark all-time. Two Penn Staters from winter teams earned perfect 4.0 grade point averages. Men's gymnast Noah Roberson, a biomedical engineering major, and Siena Salvaggio, a 7nance major and a member of the women's swimming and diving team, both have a cumulative 4.0 GPA. Penn State's 77 winter Academic All-Big Ten honorees li9 its all-time total to 6,069, which ranks No. 2 among all conference institutions since 1991-92. The Nittany Lions' 194 total honorees so far in 2017-18 are the school's highest total through the winter sports season a9er a record 117 recipients among the fall sports. To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten selection, students must have been enrolled full-time for at least 12 months and carry a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher. The Academic All-Big Ten recipi- ents for the women's hockey, men's and women's fencing and men's and women's indoor track teams will be announced later this year. The women's swimming and diving team led Penn State with 17 Aca- demic All-Big Ten honorees. The men's swimming and diving team to- taled nine, giving the program a com- bined 26 recipients. Penn State's NCAA championship wrestling team had 16 Academic All- Big Ten honorees, tied for the highest total among all conference schools. The honorees include three-time NCAA champion and Hodge Trophy winner Zain Retherford and two- time national champion Jason Nolf. ■ SCORECARD
