26 THE WOLVERINE JUNE/JULY 2018 M ichigan redshirt junior offen- sive tackle Grant Newsome had a strong response to one Twit- ter "reporter" who cited anonymous sources saying Newsome would never play again. "Would love to hear who your 'very good source' is, because I had a very different conversation with my very good sources (one of my doctors) yesterday and that was not the message," Newsome responded April 1. In truth, many assumed New- some's career was over after he suf- fered a gruesome knee injury against Wisconsin two seasons ago, one that nearly cost him his leg. Several still have their doubts as to whether he'll make it all the way back. Newsome isn't among them. He said in Paris May 1 that he's still on schedule to return. "The common theme throughout this is I'm feeling good. I feel like I'm ready to play, but I'm waiting on the doctor still," he said. "I'm just wait- ing for one kind of nagging thing to come along, one kind of piece of it. "That is coming. It's a type of thing we can't control, can't speed up. We're waiting on that thing, and once that gets back to where they get comfortable, then we'll take the reins off." Newsome — who has played in 10 games with six starts at Michigan — went through full conditioning this spring, but didn't do any contact drills or football. He has come a long, long way since last year, however, when he still had trouble walking long distances. He's now running, jumping and cutting. If he had to take another redshirt year he would, but that's not his plan. "I obviously don't want to do that, but it would be an option on the table still," he said. "I have three [years] to play two still, and one to play with." — Chris Balas MICHIGAN'S SCHEDULE IS THE NATION'S THIRD TOUGHEST Michigan finished 8-5 last season and beat only one team that boasted a winning record — Purdue, which ended up 7-6 after beating Arizona in the Foster Farms Bowl. The Wol- verines figure to be much better this season, returning a potentially elite defense and getting an upgrade at quarterback with the addition of junior Shea Patterson (ruled imme- diately eligible by the NCAA after transferring from Ole Miss), but they'll have to navigate one of the nation's most daunting schedules to improve upon the record.
