Virginia Athletics had seven teams earn Public Recognition for academic excellence after scoring in the top 10 percent of their most recent NCAA Division I Academic Progress Rates (APR), the NCAA national office announced in May. UVA's men's cross country, men's track and field and men's golf team, along with the women's basketball, women's golf, women's track and field and volleyball teams were among more than 1,200 teams nationally to earn the awards based on their most recent multi-year APRs, which include the 2013-14, 2014-15, 2015-16 and 2016- 17 academic years. Virginia's seven teams tie for the second-most in school history to be recognized since the Public Recognition inception in 2004-05, trailing the eight sports programs recognized in 2014-15. Women's golf leads the way at UVA, earning the distinction nine times. Volleyball has been recognized eight times, while this is the seventh recognition for women's track and field, fifth for men's golf, fourth for men's cross country, third for women's basketball and second for men's track and field. Teams earning Public Recogni - tion increased to 1,284 nationally, up by 79 from the previous academic year, largely as a result of an increase in perfect scores. Of the teams recognized across the country, 457 competed in men's or mixed sports, and 827 competed in women's sports. APRs for programs in the top 10 percent ranged from 985 to a perfect 1,000, and the number of teams posting perfect scores increased to 1,188, marking an increase of 98 teams from last year. The Atlantic Coast Conference ranks third na - tionally in total number of teams earning Public Recognition with 96. & VAF news notables JUNE 2018 27 event recap The Virginia Athletics Foundation and the Athletics Academic Affairs Office honored fourth- and fifth-year graduating student- athletes on Friday, May 18 th at the John Paul Jones Arena. Of the 134 graduates, 13 earned their Master's degree and 121 completed their Bachelor's degree. Stu- dent-athletes were joined by their families, coaches, faculty and academic advisors for a breakfast event to recognize their outstanding accomplishments both on and off the field. Associate athletics director for student services, Adrien Harraway, emceed the event which also featured director of athletics, Carla Williams, who pro- vided well wishes for the Class of 2018. Each student-athlete received a unique tri-color honor cord to distinguish their contributions to UVA Athletics to wear on graduation day. They also received a framed photo of their graduating class. Celebrating 2018 Student-Athlete Graduates Morgan Stearns Morgan Stearns joined the VAF staff on June 1, 2018 as an annual giving assistant after interning with the Foundation. In supporting the VAF fundrais- ing efforts, she will serve on the annual giving team with a specific focus in UVA young and student-athlete alumni (Cavaliers for Life) and social media strategy. She earned her B.A. in Media Studies from the University of Vir- ginia in 2017. During her time at Virginia, Morgan was the goalkeeper for the women's soccer team. She returns to Charlottesville after playing soccer professionally in Sweden and Norway. Morgan, the eldest of four, is a third-generation legacy of Virginia Athletics. She is enthusiastic about working with donors as well as the opportunity to continue the legacy of passion for Virginia Athletics that she shares with her family, peers, and fans alike. Courtney Johnson Courtney Johnson joined the Vir- ginia Athletics Foundation in May of 2018 as a gift processor and administrative assistant. Court- ney is responsible for recording and acknowledging donor gifts, database management and reporting, and provid- ing support for VAF directors. She is a member of the administrative and gift accounting teams. Courtney graduated from UVA with a B.A. in Mathematics and has spent three years working as a ticket services associate in the Virginia Athlet- ics Ticket Office. She enjoys attending UVA men's basketball and baseball games, and playing tennis. She is excited to continue her time within Virginia Athletics in her new role with the Foundation. Connie Harrison After 25 years of service to the Virginia Student Aid Founda- tion/Virginia Athletics Foun- dation and over 45 years of total service to the University community, Connie Harrison retired as Director of Administrative Operations in April 2018. She was passionate about the VAF mission and loved working in the University com- munity, for athletics and with so many dedicated donors and Board members. She served countless student-athletes, coaches, donors and staff with extraordinary customer service.
