michigan recruiting running back in the country. Richmond (Va.) Hermitage standout Derrick Green is rated as a five-star recruit, the top prospect in Virginia and the No. 13 overall player in the country, and admits that Michigan leads for his services. Tennessee and Auburn had previously joined the Wolverines in his top three, and although they're still in the mix, coaching changes at those institutions have dropped the duo. Miami (Fla.), Ole Miss, and Oregon make up the remainder of his top six, and Green would like to take his final two allotted official visits before making a commitment. Those visits should come in January, and he would like to make a pledge shortly before National Signing Day. Michigan Fills New Needs Although Michigan seemed to shut down linebacker recruiting when Hudson (Ohio) four-star Ben Gedeon pledged April 10, the Wolverines have hit the trail since the close of the 2012 season seeking out linebackers after re-evaluating recruiting needs in the 2013 class. While there are limited spots remaining in the class — and thus no guarantees that there is even room for another linebacker — U-M has reached out to several. Bloomfield Hills (Mich.) Brother Rice four-star Jon Reschke, a Michigan State commitment, picked up a U-M offer in late November. Although Reschke has re-affirmed his commitment to the Spartans, the Wol- Official Visits Although Michigan's in-season official visit docket was very light, the Wolverines will see plenty of postseason action on campus. Nearly the entire class of 2013 commitments visited in mid-December along with a pair of uncommitted players. More are scheduled to hit town in January. Name Pos. Monee standout now says that Ole Miss is on top. The Rebels' coaching staff has built a good relationship with his mother, and his former teammate Anthony Standifer — a one-time Michigan commit — plies his trade in Oxford. • The departures of fullback Stephen Hopkins and wide receiver Jerald Robinson from the Michigan roster bring the number of available scholarships in the 2013 recruiting class to 25. If there is any further attrition, the class could grow past 25 or the open spaces could be used in the 2014 class instead. Although only 25 new players can join the team in the fall, prospects who enroll in January (of which Michigan has six: Kyle Bosch, Jake Butt, Taco Charlton, Ross Douglas, Dymonte Thomas, and Logan Tuley-Till- man) can count toward the previous year's class. There are currently 24 commitments in the 2013 class. • Both of Michigan's junior commitments, St. Clairsville (Ohio) linebacker Michael Ferns and Chicago Hales Franciscan offensive lineman Denzel Ward, have been selected to participate in the Under Armour Underclassmen Combine in St. Petersburg, Fla. • When might Ferns and Ward have classmates join them as members of Michigan's "Team 135?" Although most of the Wolverines' top targets — Detroit Cass Tech fourstar cornerback Damon Webb and Detroit Loyola defensive end Malik McDowell, for instance — plan to take their time with the Five-star wide receiver Laquon Treadwell from Crete (Ill.) Monee recruiting process, Michigan is in good posinow says that he is leaning toward tion. Expect more dominoes to fall in the 2013 class before the 2014 group adds more Ole Miss rather than U-M. photo courtesy rivals.com pieces. January 2013    the wolverine  45
