inside michigan athletics Hockey coach Red Berenson on his team's first-half finale 2-0 victory over Western Michigan Dec. 15, following a 4-1 loss the night before "We played more like men tonight; last night we played like boys." They Said It "We lost the Gator Bowl my sophomore year so we know how it feels to lose. It's a bad feeling. But after the Sugar Bowl last year … it feels so much better and we told the younger guys about that. We want to feel good after we come home from this game." — Senior Denard Robinson on the message being delivered to the freshmen before the Outback Bowl "I got off the phone with him and I'm surprised he didn't brag about it. He's not the bragging type, but he'll let you know when he did something good." — Senior defensive tackle Will Campbell when told that his high school coach, Thomas Wilcher, scored a touchdown the last time Michigan played South Carolina in 1985 "Wolverines coach Brady Hoke has a month to figure out how to keep Jadeveon Clowney from decapitating Devin Gardner and Denard Robinson. Steve Spurrier has a month to come up with one-liners about Hoke." — SI.com's Stewart Mandel on ranking the Outback the seventh-best bowl game this year "For a second consecutive season, John Beilein has a freshman who arrived in Ann Arbor as a lightly regarded recruit, and who then promptly began stomping on opponents like Mothra. (Last time the freshman in question was named Trey Burke, who for his part has called Stauskas 'probably the best shooter I've played with.') "Whether this keeps happening because of Beilein, the freshmen, the guys doing the rankings, or some combination of all of the above, remains to be seen. But if you're a Michigan fan, what a great mystery to have to unravel." — ESPN. com on freshman Nik Stauskas, who was ranked the No. 71 recruit in the country in the 2012 class photo by per kjeldsen "I had Lloyd Carr sitting next to me. Does it get any better than that? My comments to Lloyd were these guys are as quick as Alabama's secondary. It's great to be able to share some quick, candid innocent moments, and hopefully it brings others closer to our program whether it's alums, whoever it is." — Men's basketball coach John Beilein on the company he shared near the Michigan bench for U-M's matchup with Arkansas Dec. 8   Getting To Know Junior Hockey Player Derek DeBlois A junior on the Michigan hockey team, Derek DeBlois is one of U-M's top penalty killers and defensive forwards.
