THE WOLVERINE 2018 FOOTBALL PREVIEW ■ 37 Notre Dame Rivalry Most Memorable Games 5. Sept. 11, 2010 — Michigan 28, Notre Dame 24 In a back-and-forth game at Notre Dame Stadium, Fighting Irish quarterback Dayne Christ hooked up with Kyle Rudolph for a 95-yard touchdown with 3:41 remaining to put his team ahead by three. From there, Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson led his team down the field on a 72-yard drive, scrambling into the end zone for the game-winning score with just 27 seconds left on the clock. It was the second of three straight meetings when Notre Dame held a lead over Michigan with 30 seconds left but lost. 1. Sept. 10, 2011 Michigan 35, Notre Dame 31 The first night game at Michigan Stadium was a wild one that featured an epic collapse by Notre Dame, which led 24-7 at the end of the third quarter. Wear- ing throwback uniforms, Michigan stormed back to take a 28-24 lead with 1:12 left in the game. Notre Dame finally woke up and raced down the field. Quarterback Tommy Rees found Theo Riddick for a 29-yard touchdown to go up by three with only 30 seconds left. Robinson led the way again for Michigan, work- ing his magic 80 yards down the field in three plays, finding ROY ROUNDTREE for the game-winning touchdown with two seconds remaining from 16 yards out. Robinson threw for 338 yards and four touch- downs, while running for 108 yards and another score. The outing propelled Michigan to an 11-2 re- cord, its best under head coach Brady Hoke. — Andrew Vailliencourt 2. Sept. 12, 2009 — Michigan 38, Notre Dame 34 In arguably quarterback Tate Forcier's best game in a Michigan uniform, the underdog Wolverines came back to knock off Notre Dame at The Big House. The Fighting Irish took a three-point lead with just more than five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, be- fore Forcier led U-M down the field and found wide receiver Greg Mathews in the end zone for a five-yard touchdown with 11 seconds left. Michigan held on for the win. Jimmy Clau- sen led the way for Notre Dame with three touchdown passes, but it wasn't enough. 3. Sept. 13, 1986 — Michigan 24, Notre Dame 23 This game fea- tured Jim Harbaugh as Michigan's quarterback. In Notre Dame head coach Lou Holtz's de- but, the Fighting Irish entered as un- derdogs but never punted against the Wolverines. However, mistakes kept Michigan in the game. Notre Dame had three turnovers and a costly missed ex- tra point. The biggest blunder of all was Notre Dame kicker John Carney missing a 45-yard field goal with 17 seconds left that gave Michigan the victory. 4. Sept. 14, 1991 — Michigan 24, Notre Dame 14 Notre Dame had beaten Michigan four consecutive years before the Wolverines put an end to the streak in 1991. It wasn't just the fact that Michigan won that made this game memorable, it was how it happened. In the fourth quarter of a close game, Michigan opted to go for it on fourth-and-one from the Notre Dame 25-yard line. Instead of running the ball or going for a short completion, quarterback Elvis Grbac threw a pass into the end zone to Desmond Howard, who dove for the touchdown catch. It was a signature moment for Howard, who went on to win the Heisman Trophy. PHOTO BY BOB KALMBACH PHOTO BY PER KJELDSEN
