M . ( E T ) | S E P T . 7 | M A P L E S P A V I L I O N | T V T B A | The Nittany Lions and Cardinal have established a terri7c cross-continental rivalry over the years, with the Lions holding a 12-9 edge. The two teams nearly met in the NCAA championship match last season, but Penn State fell in 7ve sets to Nebraska in the sem7nal round, while Stanford dropped a 7ve-setter to Florida in the other semi. The perennial powers will be looking to climb back on top in 2018, and Stanford cer- tainly appears to have the talent to do just that. The Cardinal boasts a superb outside hitter in junior Kathryn Plummer, as well as a 7ne supporting cast. Following up on a debut season in which she was named national Freshman of the Year, the 6-foot-6 standout 7nished with 555 kills (4.66 per set) last season, claiming AVCA Player of the Year honors. She'll be joined this fall by four other All-Americans: Tami Alade, Audriana Fitzmorris, Jenna Gray and Morgan Hentz. Penn State won two regular- season meetings with Stanford in 2017, but both were neutral-site matches. This year's rematch will be in Palo Alto, and you can bet that the Cardinal will be eager to avenge those defeats. –M.H. ACADEMICS Classroom performance sets school record Penn State student-athletes broke a school record and tied two other marks during the 2018 spring semester. Nittany Lion students combined to post an overall grade-point average of 3.15 this past spring, topping the mark of 3.14 set during the previous two se- mesters. A school-record-tying 26 teams de- livered a combined 3.0 GPA or higher during the spring semester, accounting for 84 percent of the Nittany Lions' 31 varsity programs. The previous record was set in the 2017 fall semester. A school-record-tying 66 percent of student-athletes earned at least a 3.0 GPA during the spring semester, tying the mark set during the 2017 spring se- mester. A total of 487 Nittany Lion students posted a 3.0 GPA or higher during the spring semester, the school's second-highest spring total. "This excellent academic perform- ance is a tribute to the e8orts our tal- ented and highly motivated student-athletes direct towards their academic pursuits, the priority placed on academic achievement by our coaches, and the support they receive from our outstanding Morgan Aca- demic Center sta8, faculty and admin- istration," athletic director Sandy Barbour said. A total of 229 Penn State student- athletes garnered Dean's List acco- lades by posting at least a 3.5 GPA (minimum 12 credits) during the spring semester. The 229 Dean's List honorees ranks No. 2 during the spring (237 in 2017). Women's cross country recorded the highest team GPA among Penn State's 31 programs during the spring, for the second consecutive semester. The women's soccer and 7eld hockey squads also posted team GPAs above 3.5 to deliver the second- and third- highest GPAs during the most recent semester. ■ SCORECARD
