"The coaches shouldn't have to feel like they need to light a fire under our butts, because it's clear we can handle business on our own — we've been proving that so far." Crocker revealed that mentality was established before the season even began, and a large reason was due to the mature attitude the team approached the campaign with. "Everyone came in ready to com- pete at a high level, even the fresh- men," she said. "We're still battling for different spots and roles, but ev- erybody is constantly giving their best effort all the time, regardless of the position they're in. "All of us are producing in a positive way, which is why it's been smooth sailing so far. Our freshman class re- ally hasn't acted like freshmen at all — we're all just part of one big unit." "Cori and I are similar when it comes to competition, because we both like getting after it so much," Skjodt added. "Our whole senior class, though, has worked together throughout these four years, and it's exciting to see how far we've come." The Maize and Blue begin their quest for a Big Ten title Sept. 21 at No. 3 Nebraska, before eventually turning their sights to bigger goals in the postseason. MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY The Wolverines began the 2018 cam- paign Aug. 31 in their lone home meet of the season at the Michigan Open in Dexter … Senior newcomer Ryan Rob- inson, who transferred in from Michigan State, got the individual win at the event, covering Hudson Mills Metropark's 3.11- mile course in 15:12.2 … Robinson is not allowed to compete for the Maize and Blue in 2018-19, though, due to Big Ten governing transfer rules, so he com- peted unattached while redshirt sopho- more Isaac Harding finished as the top U-M individual at the affair (15:23.3) … Michigan checked in at No. 29 in the Sept. 11 edition of the USTFCCCA poll … U-M placed second at the Michigan State Spartan Invitational in its second meet of the year Sept. 14, getting edged out by the Spartans 55-58, though neither en- tered its full lineup … Rookie John Tatter made his Michigan and eight-kilometer (4.97 miles) debut and led the way with a seventh-place finish (25:21.4). WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY Michigan kicked off the 2018 season Aug. 31 at the Michigan Open in Dexter, the squad's only home meet of the year … Redshirt freshman Camille Davre finished as the Wolverines' top individual in her first career competition, covering the 3.11- mile course at Hudson Hills Metropark in 17:37.5 … U-M was tabbed No. 12 in the Sept. 11 version of the USTFCCCA poll … The Wolverines won the season's second race, beating 12 teams at the Greeno/Dirk- sene Invitation Sept. 15 … Despite not competing in a cross country race since 2016, sixth-year senior Hannah Meier placed second (21:16.5) in the six-kilome- ter race, held in Lincoln, Neb., at the course that will later host the Big Ten Champion- ships … Meier was one of seven Wolver- ines to finish among the top nine. FIELD HOCKEY 5-3 OVERALL, 1-0 BIG TEN The Maize and Blue dropped their first two contests of the season to No. 2 North Carolina (5-1) and No. 14 Wake Forest (3-2), respectively, in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge Aug. 25-26 … Freshman goalkeeper Anna Spieker picked up her first career win in U-M's initial victory of the campaign, a 5-0 shutout at Massachusetts Aug. 31 … Michigan held a second-half lead against No. 1 Connecticut — the defending NCAA champions — Sept. 2, but was not able to hold onto it, eventually falling 2-1 … The Wolverines grabbed a thrilling 2-1 overtime triumph Sept. 7 in their home opener against Pacific … After tallying the game-winning goal against the Tigers, senior forward Emma Way once again se- cured the dagger in a 2-1, extra-session victory over Monmouth Sept. 9 … Big Ten play opened with a 3-1 triumph over Rut- gers Sept. 14, while a 9-0 win over Central Michigan followed Sept. 16. MEN'S SOCCER 5-1 OVERALL, 1-0 BIG TEN Michigan dropped its season opener 2-1 to Tulsa Aug. 24 … The Wolverines picked up their first triumph of the 2018 campaign three days later with a 2-0 shut- out of South Florida … A second straight blanking ensued when the Maize and Blue held UC Riverside scoreless, 3-0, in an Aug. 31 showdown in Ann Arbor … Sophomore forward Umar Farouk Osman picked up his first career goal during the contest … Michigan sealed its first over- time win of the year Sept. 7 with a 3-2 thriller against WMU … A 3-0 goose egg versus Marquette Sept. 10 and 2-0 vic- tory over Rutgers marked U-M's third and fourth shutouts in five victories on the season … Osman netted both goals in the Big Ten opener and has four goals and two assists for 10 points through six games. WOMEN'S SOCCER 5-4 OVERALL, 1-1 BIG TEN First-year head coach Jennifer Klein grabbed the first victory of her U-M ten- ure when the Wolverines kicked off the 2018 season Aug. 16 with a 3-1 triumph over Boston University … The Maize and Blue followed with wins over Western Michigan Aug. 19 (2-0) and Marquette Aug. 23 (3-2), before dropping their first contest of the campaign 3-1 to Louisville Aug. 26 … Consecutive road setbacks to Wake Forest (4-0) and Florida Gulf Coast (3-2), respectively, followed the loss to the Cardinals, before the Wolverines got back in the win column with a 6-1 thrashing of Central Michigan Sept. 7 in Ann Arbor … Big Ten play began Sept. 13 with a 3-2, double-overtime loss at Indiana, followed by a 1-0 triumph at Purdue … Sophomore midfielder Nicki Hernandez has started all nine games and notched six goals and five assists for 17 points … She ranks first in the league as of Sept. 16 for total points and points per game (1.89). VOLLEYBALL 11-0 OVERALL, 0-0 BIG TEN The Maize and Blue began the 2018 campaign in style at the Aug. 25 War Ea- gle Invitational in Auburn, Ala., sweep- ing High Point and Auburn … After she averaged 12.1 assists per set at the event, junior MacKenzi Welsh earned her first career Big Ten Setter of the Week award … She posted consecutive double-doubles and was named to the War Eagle Invita- tional All-Tournament team as well … The Wolverines began the home portion of their schedule by sweeping Cleveland State, Eastern Michigan and Harvard at the Michigan Invitational Aug. 31-Sept. 1 … U-M's 3-0 triumph over Oakland Sept. 7 marked the first time in program history the team swept its first seven matches in a season … The sweeps continued through the next three matches, before U-M dropped one set against Notre Dame in a 3-1 victory Sept. 16 … The Wolverines opened the season by winning 32 con- secutive sets and were listed No. 18 in the AVCA coaches' poll Sept. 17. ❏
