OCTOBER 2018 THE WOLVERINE 63   MICHIGAN IN THE PROS RBI in 69 contests with the Twins and White Sox. • Clayton Richard (2005), SP, San Diego Padres: Was placed on the dis- abled list Aug. 28, and will miss the rest of the season due to inflammation in his left knee and bone spurs in his right knee … Finished the campaign with a 7-11 record and 5.33 ERA in 27 starts. The NFL JAKE BUTT MAKING AN EARLY IMPACT IN DENVER Denver Broncos tight end Jake Butt waited a long time to get his NFL career started, after a torn ACL he suffered in Michigan's Orange Bowl loss to Florida State on Dec. 30, 2016, kept him out for the entire 2017 NFL campaign. Now that he's fully healthy, Butt has started the first two games of his professional career in Denver, haul- ing in six catches for 77 yards, both of which rank as the third most on the team. "It was slow going [against the Raiders Sept. 16], as [Denver quarter- back] Case Keenum struggled might- ily out of the gates, posting just 16 passing yards in the first half on five completions — but it was clear that targeting Butt in this game was a pri- ority," Chad Jensen of CBS Denver wrote Sept. 17. "The Broncos stormed back in the second half to snatch a victory from the veritable jaws of defeat, and Butt's play was a big part of that." FORMER WOLVERINES ON NFL ROSTERS Through Sept. 17 • Ben Braden (Played at U-M from 2012-16), OG, New York Jets: Was waived by the Jets Sept. 13, but was signed to their practice squad the fol- lowing day … Has not appeared in a game this season. • Tom Brady (1996-99), QB, New England Patriots: Is off to another stel- lar start in 2018, completing 67.6 per- cent of his throws with five touchdowns and one pick through two games … Has thrown for 511 yards and was aver- aging 6.9 yards per pass. • Jake Butt (2013-16), TE, Denver Broncos: Started each of the first two contests for the 2-0 Broncos (wins over Seattle and Oakland) … Has reeled in six catches for 77 yards (12.8 yards per reception). • Taco Charlton (2013-16), DE, Dallas Cowboys: Earned the starting nod at defensive end in the season's first two contests, and tallied six tackles, a sack and a pass defended. • Jehu Chesson (2012-16), WR, Free Agent: Appeared in the Washington Redskins' 21-9 loss to the Colts Sept. 16, but did not record any statistics … Was waived by the team Sept. 17 and is a free agent. • Frank Clark (2011-14), DE, Seattle Seahawks: Off to a hot start for the 0-2 Seahawks, recording a sack in each of the first two games among four total tackles. • Jeremy Clark (2013-16), CB, New York Jets: Resides on New York's prac- tice squad and has not seen action in a regular-season contest. • Mason Cole (2014-17), C, Arizona Cardinals: Started at center in the Car- dinals' first two games — losses to the Redskins and Rams, respectively — af- ter incumbent A.Q. Shipley tore his ACL in fall camp. • Blake Countess (2011-14/finished at Auburn), CB, Los Angeles Rams: Manned one of the starting cornerback spots for Los Angeles in its first two out- ings, and has made one tackle. • Amara Darboh (2012-16), WR, Se- attle Seahawks: Failed a physical with the New England Patriots Sept. 3, and was reverted back to Seattle as a re- sult … Placed on the Seahawks' injured reserve list and underwent successful shoulder surgery Sept. 4 … "When the Patriots cut Darboh, his contract was returned to the Seahawks," Andy Pat- ton of Seahawks Wire wrote Sept. 4. "His injury will keep him out for the 2018 season, so Seattle fans will get to see Darboh battle for a roster spot once again in 2019." • Devin Funchess (2012-14), WR, Car- olina Panthers: Ranks second on the team in both catches (10) and receiving yards (118) through two contests … Has not hauled in a score yet, but is averag- ing 11.8 yards per reception. • Ben Gedeon (2014-16), LB, Min- nesota Vikings: Started the Vikings' season opening 24-16 win over San Francisco, and came off the bench in the 29-29 tie at Green Bay … Totaled five tackles in the two games. • Graham Glasgow (2012-15), OG, Detroit Lions: Started the first two con- tests at center for 0-2 Detroit. • Ryan Glasgow (2013-16), DT, Cin- cinnati Bengals: Participated in each of Cincinnati's showdowns (no starts), registering seven total tackles. • Brandon Graham (2006-09), DE, Philadelphia Eagles: Started at defen- sive end in Philadelphia's first two out- ings and recorded six tackles. • Leon Hall (2003-06), CB, Oakland Raiders: Earned a start in the 33-13 Rich Hill • MLB The 38-year-old left-hander turned in arguably his best start of the year for the Los Angeles Dodgers in an 11-1 blowout of the San Diego Padres Aug. 24. Hill threw six scoreless innings, only giving up two hits while striking out eight and walking one batter. The victory helped Los Angeles remain in the thick of both the National League West and the wild card hunt (as of Sept. 17, they sat a half game back of Colorado in the West, and were tied with St. Louis for the second wild card). Maurice Hurst • NFL He recorded his first career sack in his first-ever starting assign- ment for the Oakland Raiders Sept. 16, taking down Denver quar- terback Case Keenum. A heart concern caused Hurst to drop all the way to the fifth round in the NFL Draft, but it appears the Raiders made the right move by taking a chance on him. Jabrill Peppers • NFL In the Browns' 21-21 tie with Pittsburgh Sept. 9, Peppers ran back a fumble 16 yards to the Steelers 1-yard line midway through the fourth quarter, narrowly missing a touchdown before being forced out of bounds. Cleveland punched it in on the next play, helping to snap the club's 17-game losing streak. HEADLINERS Former Michigan athletes in the news this month
