Williams didn't waste any time sparking the Irish offense. On his first carry of the season, he scam- pered to the end zone for a 45-yard score to put Notre Dame up 7-0 in the first quarter. "It was big hole, so I hit it," Wil- liams said. "I was like, 'Man, I'm gone.' It was a great feeling, making up for a lot of lost time." Williams finished with a career- high 161 yards and a touchdown on 21 carries (7.7 yards per attempt). "I'm really proud of his growth and his maturity," head coach Brian Kelly said. "Those come first. If he wasn't growing as a young man, as a student-athlete here at Notre Dame, he wouldn't have the chance that he got here tonight.
