Satchel Pierce has been ruled academi- cally ineligible for the first semester of Penn State's upcoming season. Pierce may practice with the team but is not permitted to compete or travel to away games. His academic status will be re- evaluated following the conclusion of the 2018 fall semester. Pierce appeared in 24 games last sea- son, averaging 1.6 rebounds and 1.6 points per game. The Barberton, Ohio, native sat out the 2016-17 season in ac- cordance with NCAA transfer rules. He played in 51 games at Virginia Tech be- fore leaving for Penn State. CHARITY GAME SCHEDULED Penn State will travel to West Virginia for an exhibi- tion game on Nov. 3 at WVU Coliseum. All proceeds from the game will benefit American Red Cross hurricane relief ef- forts. Both teams were originally scheduled to play exhibition games against other opponents on Nov. 3. The Nittany Lions canceled a game against Nyack College that had been set for the Bryce Jordan Center. West Virginia was to play Alder- son Broaddus at home, but that game, too, has been canceled. The NCAA recently approved a meas- ure allowing schools to use one of their two allotted exhibition games to play another Division I school for the pur- pose of raising money for disaster relief. This is the second year in a row that West Virginia has played a charity game. In 2017, the Mountaineers hosted Albany to raise funds for Red Cross hurricane relief. "Through this exhibition game with West Virginia, our team has an opportu- nity to help and support those who have felt the devastating effects of Hurricane Florence and its aftermath," Chambers said. Even though their campuses are only 180 miles apart, Penn State and West Virginia have not faced each other since January 1991, when the Lions won in Morgantown, 66-33. They had previ- ously shared an Atlantic 10 affiliation and met at least once each year from 1936-91. Their rivalry ended when Penn State began Big Ten play in 1992-93. The Nittany Lions will play host to two games on the opening weekend of the 2018-19 season, facing North Florida on Friday, Nov. 9, and Jacksonville State on Monday, Nov. 12. Both of those games are part of the U.S. regional of the Can- cun Challenge. The Lions' 2018 National Invitation Tournament championship banner will be unveiled during festivities prior to the regular-season opener vs. the Ospreys. ■ JOE KRENTZMAN & SON, INC. • Buyers and Brokers of Steel, Iron and Nonferrous Metals • Industrial Scrap Buyers • Container Service Available • Large Service Territory Since 1903 Lewistown, PA • Hollidaysburg, PA • DuBois, PA (800) 543-2000 • www.krentzman.net F irst i n S cra p TIPOFF GAME The Nittany Lions will open their season next month with an exhibition game against for- mer Atlantic 10 rival West Virginia at the WVU Coli- seum.
