CLEARING
HURDLES
Third-year quarterback
Bryce Perkins showed off
his raw athleticism and
playmaking ability early and
often this season, hurdling
defenders on two separate
plays during a 27-3 win over
Louisville Sept. 22. ESPN
ranked the effort as the
No. 2 top play from college
football in week four.
"There was an amazement
factor today," head coach
Bronco Mendenhall said.
"I've seen him hurdle, but
maybe not that high. It was
at least waist level, it was
more number level.
"I think we've all seen a
number of players hurdle
someone below the waist.
That might have set a re-
cord."
Perkins went on to become
just the second Cavalier to
pass for 200 or more yards
and rush for at least 100
in the same game, doing
so against North Carolina
Oct. 27. The Chandler, Ariz.,
native finished with 217
passing yards and 112 more
on the ground during the
Cavs' 31-21 win.
That wasn't the only record
Perkins set this year while
helping the 7-5 Cavaliers to
back-to-back bowl appear-
ances for the first time since
2004-05. He set single-sea-
son school records for total
offense (3,314 yards) and
total touchdowns (31), while
his four 100-yard rushing
games are also tied for the
most ever by a quarterback
in one season at UVA.
At the conclusion of the
regular season, he ranked
No. 1 in the ACC and 16th
nationally with 188 points
responsible for, and was sec-
ond in the league and 18th
nationally in total offense.
