cavalier sports DECEMBER 2018 7 S econd-year Khyasia Caldwell is a rarity in college athletics — she participates in two sports at UVA. A year ago, Caldwell made the women's basketball team as a walk-on and played in 14 games, scoring 13 points. Last spring, she was the ACC runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 20-feet, 1/4 inches to earn all-conference honors. She ranks 10th in school history in the event with a mark of 20 feet, 1 inch. Caldwell graduated from Pocono Moun- tain East High School in Pocono Summit, Pa., with impressive credentials. In basket- ball, she eclipsed the 1,000-point career mark, pulled down a school-record 23 rebounds in a game as a freshman and was a two-time all-conference player. In track, she was a three-time state champion in the long jump. My advice to student-athletes is: Learn how to manage your time and keep an agenda so you can see all of your assign- ments you have for the week. The primary challenge facing student- athletes today is: Focusing on school as much as you focus on your sport. How difficult is it for you to play two sports at UVA with its high academic stan- dards: It's not really difficult, but it is dif- ficult transitioning from one sport to another. You have to stay focused throughout the year. The best thing about UVA is: The at- mosphere. They provide all the resources you need, plus the opportunity to go here. Why I chose UVA: I wanted to go somewhere not too far from home and not too close, and I also wanted to go south and somewhere I knew would be a challenge for me in academics and sports. What I like the most about basketball: I've always loved basketball since I was little. What I've learned from basketball: I've learned patience and teamwork and how to work with others, plus how to over- come things while working with others. The highlight of my athletic career: Scoring over 1,000 points in high school. My dream vacation would be: I would love to go to the Bahamas. My post-college ambition is: To coach a high school or college basketball team. Caldwell, who competes in the long jump for the track and field team, made the basketball team as a walk- on last year.
