72 ■ THE WOLFPACKER
Wilson was named first-team All-ACC and
second-team All-American last season.
"If you want to start with three great
players in this league, that's three very
good players," Avent noted. "We got good
players on this field. Three players in bas-
ketball, that's a lot.
"When you are taking about three guys
on a baseball team, it's going to take a lot
more than that."
Avent noted that among the newcomers
who had good falls included sophomore
outfielder Jonny Butler, a junior college
transfer, and versatile freshman Tyler Mc-
Donough, a product of Moeller High in
Cincinnati — the same prep program that
produced former NC State and MLB pitch-
ers Brackman and Eric Surkamp.
Replacing three draft picks in the out-
field plus longtime reliable infielder Ste-
phen Pitarra is going to take time, however.
"We got a lot of new guys on this ball-
club," Avent noted. "Any time you bring in
this many players it's going to take a while
for us to jell and figure out who needs to
play where and have it come together."
The goal is to get that done as soon as
possible to compete in the always chal-
lenging ACC.
"Every year in the ACC there is a fine
line between winning the ACC and not be-
ing in the ACC Tournament," Avent said.
"Our league is so close, it's so competi-
tive." ■
