Newcomer To Watch Sophomore outfielder Jonny Butler Replacing three MLB Draft picks in the outfield is a challenge facing NC State. Pack head coach Elliott Avent hopes Butler can help fill one of the voids. He hit .372 as a freshman at Heartland Community College in Normal, Ill., with eight homers and added speed on the base paths with 39 steals, which was fifth most among junior college players. He was only caught stealing three times. Catcher Patrick Bailey batted .321 and hit an NC State rookie-record 13 home runs en route to ACC Freshman of the Year and consensus Freshman All-America honors last year. PHOTO BY KEN MARTIN Noting The Pack • A new rule allows college baseball teams to scrimmage each other in the fall, and NC State tried to take advantage of it by traveling to Colum- bia, S.C., to play South Carolina. What started as a beautiful afternoon turned quickly, however, and the game was called after 4½ innings. Head coach Elliott Avent is still a fan of the new rule. "It's a very good thing," the coach said. • Two freshmen on this year's team are from the Czech Republic — infielder Vojtech Mensik and outfielder Marek Chlup. "We played the Czech Republic two seasons ago," Avent said. "In the fall you were allowed to play one game against a national team like that, and those two players stood out and we started to recruit them. "It was a long process, but we got it done."
