Whigan. Walker is a redshirt freshman, Holmes a redshirt sophomore and Whigan a juco transfer with junior eligi- bility. It appeared as though Walker emerged from winter workouts as the early fa- vorite at this position. Bates himself said prior to the Citrus Bowl that he thought the 6-foot-6, 308-pounder was ready to step into a bigger role. "Rasheed is fully capable of doing the job,' Bates said. "He might have the most natural talent of any o=ensive tackle presently on our roster." That doesn't mean Walker will be handed a starting position. Franklin de- scribed Holmes as the Lions' best pass- blocking o=ensive tackle last fall, and Whigan was rated by Rivals.com as the top juco o=ensive tackle in the Class of 2019. Three other position battles I'll be closely watching this spring are the X wide receiver spot, where Justin Shorter and George are competing to replace Johnson; the out of the NCAA tournament last season. The start is Penn State's best since opening the 1980 season at 10-2.
