Everything he���s gotten, he���s earned.��� ��� Head coach Richard Sykes One Of The Best Junior Albin Choi Is Among The Top Amateur Golfers In The World L By Jacey Zembal egendary NC State golf coach Richard Sykes returns two golfers who competed in last year���s NCAA Ann Arbor Regional, where the Wolfpack finished tied for sixth. ���PREVIEW Men���s Golf NC State fell one spot short of qualifying as a team for the NCAA Championships, posting a 7-over-par 859 that was 10 shots behind fifth-place Texas Christian and tied for sixth with Notre Dame. However, Wolfpack golfer Albin Choi won the individual title at the regional and became the 13th golfer in NC State history to qualify to the NCAA Championships as an individual since 1965. The current junior shot a 1-under 218 to finish tied for 37th at the event, which was held at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif. 4 By The Numbers ACC Coach of the Year awards won by Richard Sykes during his long tenure leading the Wolfpack ��� 1982, 1988, 1990 and 2000.The former NCSU graduate, who competed in track and golf while in college, is entering his 42nd season coaching the golf team. NC State won the title at the Palmetto Intercollegiate in 1995. Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate, March��24-26 ��� The second of two tournaments in South Carolina, the Hootie takes place at Bulls Bay Country Club in Awendaw, S.C. NC State finished seventh out of 15 teams in the event last year. The Wolfpack won the event in 2008. ACC Championships, April�� 26-28 ��� NC��State will be competing at the Old North State Club in London, N.C., where the Wolfpack finished ninth among 11 teams last year. Mitchell Sutton tied for 21st with a 1-over-par 217. after winning one title and finishing in the top�� 14 in seven events during the regular season. He placed 41st at the ACC Championships at Old North State Club in London, N.C., but bounced back with his stellar performance at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional and the NCAA Championships. Senior Mitchell Sutton also returns from last year���s squad. He finished tied for 45th with a 9-over 222 at the NCAA Ann Arbor Regional, and he also tied for 21st at the ACC Championships. ���The ones that have been steady and playing the most are Mitch Sutton and Albin Choi,��� Sykes said. ���Mitch broke his wrist in the fall of 2011. He was recovering all spring and was never quite the same. He is still struggling a little bit. He doesn���t quite have the confidence he used to have.��� Settling on the lineup after Choi and Sutton is the main task over the five tournaments remaining before the ACC Championships April 26-28. In mid-February, Choi was ranked as the No.��18 amateur golfer in the world. photo courtesy nc state media relations Noting The Pack ��� Junior Albin Choi teamed up with NCSU sophomore women���s golfer Augusta James and two other teammates to lead Team Canada to the 2013 copa de las Americas Crown at the Blue Monster Course at Doral Golf Resort & Spa in Miami Jan. 3-6. The quartet combined for a four-day total of 25-over-par 1,177, which topped Mexico by one stroke and United States by two. Choi sank a 12-foot put for par on the 18th hole to clinch it.The event is for amateurs in North, Central and South America and the Caribbean. ��� The Lonnie Poole Golf Course was selected to host a NCAA men���s regional championships in 2014.The men���s program has qualified for an NCAA regional 13 out of the last 15 years and has made 38 postseason appearances overall. The Arnold Palmer-designed course was built on NCSU���s Centennial Campus in 2007. ��� NC State and Oklahoma State are the only two programs to have an NCAA regional medalist three times over the last four years. Choi won last year, current senior Mitch Sutton won in 2011, and eventual NCAA champion Matt Hill won in 2009.
