W By Bruce Winkworth ith a pair of All-American distance runners, several proven standouts in the jumps and throws, and a freshman sprinter just a year removed from a high school national championship, NC States womens track and field team enters the 2013 season with potential point scorers in every event group. Andie Cozzarelli, a fifth-year senior from Apex, N.C., came to NC State and PREVIEW woMens track struggled for two years before discovering a food allergy to glutens. After adjusting her diet, Cozzarelli emerged as a national performer in the long distance events, earning All-America honors in the 10,000 meters at the 2011 NCAA Championships, less than a year after running her first 10K race. She repeated as an All-American a year ago. Kenyetta Iyevbele, a junior from Charlotte, N.C., came to the Wolfpack as a promising athlete and realized that potential in her first year on the track, earning All-America recognition in the 800 meters as a true freshman in 2011. Felled by a stress fracture at the NCAA East Regional a year ago, she was unable to repeat as an All-American, but she should be a national contender in her return to action this season. Andie is a multiple All-American and a cornerstone of our program, Wolfpack head coach Rollie Geiger said. Kenyetta is another All-American, in the 800. Thats two All-Americans, so were covered in the 10,000 and the 800. Senior Erin Mercer and sophomore Samantha Norman were NCAA regional qualifiers a year ago in the steeplechase. That gives the Wolfpack strength in three of the primary distance events, and freshman Samantha George a six-time state champion in high school and the 2012 ACC Rookie of the Year in cross country adds depth at steeplechase.
