said. "In my second year, I was able to sit on the bench and take in the way they did things. I saw every little part of the game. Obviously, it was tough sitting out a year. But my game as a player evolved because I was able to pick up on things. "The coaching staff has done an incredible job. I got to sit, observe and listen because I was unable to do much physically. But my mental game got better because I kept charts and had conversations with the coaches on a daily basis. I think that added to my game." Not that this surprised O'Connor. "He had a mom that was a successful coach [Brenda King coached high school boys' and girls' basketball], and I think he has a good understanding of what the responsibility is of a player in a program," O'Connor said. "He plays the game the right way. He's been a successful student. He desires to be a teacher and a coach. He's loved by the kids in the community because, in my opinion, he puts himself out there to be a good role model. "Jared is very humble," O'Connor added. "He does his job. But as a leader he says something to players when things need to be said. Obviously, you have your coaches, but you need leadership in the ranks and somebody those players can look up to — not because he's been part of the most successful run in our history, but because he certainly does it the right way." King's father also coached baseball, so to say that sports were a focal point in the household would be an understatement. "I like to think I grew up in a household with two coaches," King said. "I like to think that's the way I view everything, through the eyes of a coach and looking for ways to improve things. "I like to think a lot of that carries over off the field as well as on the field." When UVa assistant coach Kevin McMullan was recruiting King, what he saw made O'Connor and the rest of the staff know that this Pulaski County High multi-sport athlete would be a great fit. "We knew the way he was brought up was the right way," O'Connor said. "He lived in an environment where he learned things the right way. He was a really good student and that's the type of guy we have to get. "When he redshirted, players can become disengaged and sit on a log or become an active member of the team. He became fully engaged in terms of trying to get better." ◆ Regional support backed by institutional strength Wells Fargo Private Bank offers the dedicated attention of our regional team backed by the strength, innovation and resources of the larger Wells Fargo organization.
