Elly Henes finished second at the ACC Championships and NCAA Southeast Re- gional, and then was 16th at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America hon- ors for the second time in cross country. However, she fell ill during the track and field season and subsequently redshirted for the outdoor portion. She'll be a red- shirt junior in that sport next spring. "She was not able to run last April," Coach Henes said. "It was tempting to line her up during the season. We just didn't feel she was 100 percent. She had a tough spring." Clairmonte was fifth at the NCAA Southeast Regional, but fell to 62nd and was the third runner for NC State at the NCAA Championships. Henes said there isn't much difference in time between the 30th runner and the 60th, giving her hope for a strong finish this fall. "Those 30 places are probably 15 sec- onds apart, and you can end up on the wrong side of that," Henes said. "She has been there twice. She understands what she needs to do to finish where she wants ■ Key Meets • Nuttycombe Wisconsin Invitational, Oct. 18: NC State finished 10th at the event last year, with Colorado coming in first. Elly Henes finished 23rd, and Dominique Clairmonte was 42nd. • ACC Championships, Nov. 1: NCSU edged Notre Dame by one point to win the title in Boston. The ACC Championships will be held in Blacksburg, Va., this season. • NCAA Championship, Nov. 23: The NCAA Cham - pionships will be held in Terre Haute, Ind., this fall. Henes clocked 15:31.97 to edge Springs' 15:33.43, with the latter setting the mark in 1983. Henes hopes to use that as a springboard for cross country season. Top Newcomer Freshman Kelsey Chmiel arrives with an impres- sive résumé and could be in the mix right away. The Saratoga Springs (N.Y.) High product was a three- time state champion and finished in the top five at the Nike Cross Nationals all four years. She was named the 2016 New York State Gato- rade Runner of the Year, and was the 2017 New Bal- ance Outdoor national champion in the two mile.
