70 ■ THE WOLFPACKER to finish at the NCAAs." Holt and Shaw both had quality outdoor track seasons last spring, and junior Julia Zachgo could be one to watch after doing well in the steeplechase. Zimmermann was in the Wolfpack's top seven in every main meet last year. Redshirt junior Anna Vess has also put together a quality summer and could be in the mix. Coach Henes has high hopes for freshman Kelsey Chmiel, who could be an elite runner at NC State at some point in her career. "She was second at high school nation- als," the head coach noted. "When we re- cruit, we tell incoming freshman that we are counting on them. We have returners that can step up and do it, but somebody at Kelsey's level can. She ran 16:18 on the track in the 5K. "I think she can be a major factor, but we want to give it time at this level to get used to 6K." Freshmen Lulu Black and Sam Bush were also standouts in their respective states of Indiana and Ohio. "They could be factors, too, but we red- shirted a good amount of the freshman class last year," Coach Henes noted. ■ Your Wolfpack Connection For Legal Services In Southeastern North Carolina THE MCGOUGAN LAW FIRM 130 Jefferson Street, Whiteville, NC 28472 T. WWW.WHITEVILLELAW.COM Noting The Pack • The star-crossed NC State career for fifth-year senior Ryen Frazier has one last chapter to be writ- ten. Frazier, who was injured last year and red- shirted, has faced adversity throughout her college c areer. Frazier was a four-time New Balance national champion in high school, and then cracked NC State's top five runners as a freshman in 2015, finishing No. 108 at the NCAA Championships her rookie year. The three-time All-ACC selection was 21st at the ACC Championships in 2017, 14th in 2016 and fifth in the 2015. "She's doing very well," Henes said. "She fell and had a fracture in the sacrum. Her bone density is great. It was just the way she fell. It took forever to heal. She spent the summer in Colorado Springs on an internship job out there, and her training is going really well." • NC State has won three straight ACC champi - onships, edging Notre Dame last year by a single point (67-68) with Syracuse finishing third. Henes expects the Wolfpack, Fighting Irish and Orange to once again battle for the league title, with possibly Florida State in the mix. On the national level, the altitude of Colorado has helped the Buffaloes win the NCAA title, with New Mexico finishing second. NCSU will face New Mexico at the Notre Dame Invitational Oct. 4 and the Wis - consin Nuttycombe Invitational Oct. 18. Colorado could return to the latter event, but the Buffaloes hadn't announced their schedule as of Aug. 1. "The West region has been slightly stronger the last few years," Henes said. "It's nice that at Wis - consin, we'll face teams we don't see at the ACCs and regionals."
