32 THE WOLVERINE DECEMBER 2019   MICHIGAN FOOTBALL games with Notre Dame the same day U-M trounced the Irish 45-14 Oct. 26. It marked the 44th meeting of the rivals, and the Wolverines and will next meet the Fighting Irish on the gridiron on Sept. 3, 2033 in Ann Arbor and on Sept. 2, 2034 in South Bend. — Chris Balas CHRIS EVANS TO BE REINSTATED IN JANUARY This past February, it was an- nounced that senior running back Chris Evans was not with the Michi- gan Wolverines football team for the 2019 season. At that time, U-M spokesman David Ablauf noted: "Chris Evans is not a member of the football team at this time. Pri- vacy laws prohibit us from commenting further." Evans added via a tweet that it was an academic issue that would hold him out of football. Later on the same social media platform, Evans seemed to hint at the possibility of returning to the football field for U-M in 2020. Head coach Jim Harbaugh confirmed Nov. 11 that Evans is on track to be reinstated to the team in the school's winter term, starting in January. "When he gets back in school, he will be able to par- ticipate fully in football again," Harbaugh explained. "My un- derstanding is that he had a productive, scheduled meeting to see if he would be reinstated back into school. "My understanding is that he will be [back in school] for the winter term. We'll welcome him back to the football team." When Evans returns for the 2020 season, he will be a fifth-year senior. He has made an impact in the back- field since his first game as a Wolver- ine, where he had eight rushes for 112 yards and two touchdowns in the 2016 season opener against Hawai'i. Evans has rushed for 1,722 yards and 14 touchdowns on 344 carries in his career at U-M. He also has 40 re- ceptions for 392 yards and two scores. Evans was an All-Big Ten honorable mention (coaches) in 2017 when he generated a total of 842 all-purpose yards (685 rushing) and seven touch- downs as a sophomore. — Clayton Sayfie JOSH ROSS LIKELY TO REDSHIRT Junior middle linebacker Josh Ross has not seen game action since suffer- ing an ankle injury against Wisconsin Sept. 21. According to Jim Harbaugh, Ross is back healthy after U-M's sec- ond bye week and heading into the Nov. 16 matchup with MSU. Ross has played in three games so far, and could retain his redshirt if he only plays in one more game the rest of the season. "He's back. He's prepared and ready to play," the head coach said Nov. 11. "Our plan with Josh is to play [him] in one more game. He hasn't redshirted so far, and with the time he has al- ready missed hopefully we'll have the luxury of him playing in only one more game and then being able to get him an extra year. That would give him two more after this year. "… If one of the two inside 'backers [redshirt freshman Cam McGrone and fifth-year senior Jordan Glasgow] would not be able to start or finish a game [that is when Ross is most likely to play]. We're preparing him for when we need him the most. We're trying to make that the one game that we would play him in." Ross played against Middle Tennessee State, Army and Wis- consin this season and logged 18 tackles, including a career- high nine stops in the win over Army. He was an All-Big Ten honorable mention, by both the coaches and media, in 2018, when he posted 61 tackles. — Clayton Sayfie Freshman Redshirt Tracker The numbers below are after the first nine games.
