MARCH 2020 ■ 11 TRACKING THE PACK Bill Cowher Elected To Pro Football Hall Of Fame Longtime Pittsburgh Steelers coach and former NC State linebacker Bill Cowher was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame as a member of the Cen- tennial Slate for the class of 2020. The Hall's President and CEO, David Baker, surprised Cowher in studio with the life-changing news live on CBS' "The NFL Today" prior to the network's broadcast of the AFC divisional playoff matchup between the Tennessee Titans and Baltimore Ravens Jan. 11. A special Blue-Ribbon Panel met at the Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, in Jan- uary to elect the Centennial Slate. This is the first time any members of the Pro Football Hall of Fame were elected during a selection meeting held at the Hall. The Centennial Slate includes 10 seniors (players who last played more than 25 seasons ago), three contributors (an individual other than a player or coach) and two coaches (who last coached more than five seasons ago), and the new inductees were voted on from a list of 38 finalists. The Centennial Blue-Ribbon Panel carefully scrutinized nearly 300 nominees during the process. Cowher served as the head coach for the Steelers for 15 seasons (1992-2006). He led the team to 10 playoff berths, nine division championships, two Super Bowl appearances and one NFL championship, earning the Lombardi Trophy with a 21-10 triumph over the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XL. He finished with a career record of 161-99-1 (.619 winning percentage). At NC State, Cowher was a star linebacker whose 195 tackles as a senior in 1978 is a school record for a single season, and his 176 hits as a junior rank third best. Cowher becomes the first former NC State football player to make the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
