48 ■ THE WOLFPACKER SOPHIE HANSSON Swimming The freshman and sophomore classes for the women's swimming and diving program represent a bright future for the Wolfpack, and sophomore Sophie Hansson is one that is leading the way. Hansson swept the 100 and 200 breaststroke events at the ACC Championships for the second straight year, and her time of 2:05.59 in the latter race was the best at the league meet since 2014, while her clocking of 57.74 seconds in the 100 tied her own conference meet record. She owned the nation's fastest times in both races as of Feb. 23. The last Wolfpack swimmer to win back-to-back 200-yard breaststroke titles was Patty Wat - ters in 1981-82. Hansson, who finished third in both races at the NCAA Championships a year ago, was joined by classmates Emma Muzzy (200 backstroke) and Kylee Alons (50 free) in winning individual titles at the ACC meet. Freshman Katharine Berkoff also won the 100 backstroke, and she combined with Hansson, Alons and senior Ky-lee Perry to take the 400 medley relay for the Pack. Junior Kathleen Moore (400 individual medley) also took home a gold medal at the conference meet, in which NC State finished second to Virginia. Hansson and her fellow swimmers will aim for NCAA glory March 18-21 in Athens, Ga. She is the top return - ing swimmer from the two breaststroke races last year. The Wolfpack women have never had an individual national title winner in swimming, though Kristin Davies did win the NCAA championship in the platform dive in 2009. — Matt Carter/Photo courtesy NC State Media Relations wolfpacker spotlight
