JAMES BRADY
Diving
In the 1970s and '80s, NC State men's diving ruled the ACC. Randy Horton, Mike
deGruy, Mike Tober, Bob McHenry, David Keane, Paul Breitfeller and Glen Barroncini
all won multiple ACC titles on the 1- and 3-meter dives during those decades. A few
divers, notably Todd Smith, continued the tradition into the 1990s, but it has been
a long drought for the Pack diving program since then.
That may be changing after the 2020 ACC Diving Championships, where senior
James Brady became the first Pack male diver to either win an individual diving
title or be named the men's Most Valuable Diver at the meet since Andy Johnson
in 2000. Brady took home first place on the 3-meter board and also made it to the
finals of both the 1-meter and platform, finishing in the top six in all three events.
He is just the third male diver in program history to be named the ACC Diving
Championship meet MVP.
He had been knocking on the door of taking home the conference title through
-
out his career. Brady finished third on the 3-meter dive with a program-record score
in 2018, and then last season he was
third on the platform.
Brady is hoping to return to the NCAA Championships, where he qualified for
both the 3-meter and platform in 2018, and the platform in 2017. Prior to his
freshman season, no State diver had advanced to the NCAA Championships on
the platform since 1996.
