AUGUST 2020 THE WOLVERINE 13   INSIDE MICHIGAN ATHLETICS MICHIGAN'S TOP PERFORMERS Former swimmer Tommy Cope: The 2020 senior was one of 28 Big Ten students to be awarded with the league's Medal of Honor Award June 26, which is given "to one male and one female student from the graduating class of each member institution who has demonstrated excellence on and off the field throughout their college career." Of the 28 recipients, Cope is one of just three who are also an Academic All-Amer- ican. The Dayton, Ohio, native served as a team captain in 2019- 20, while winning Big Ten titles in the 200-yard breaststroke and the 800-yard freestyle relay this past season. Former lacrosse defender Finn Goonan: He was tabbed as a United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association Scholar All-American June 29, alongside senior midfielder Christian Ford. Goonan played in five of the club's seven games in 2020 before the season was cut short, initiat- ing three caused turnovers. The Northport, N.Y., native appeared in 38 contests overall during his time in Ann Arbor, causing 20 turnovers and compiling 60 ground balls. He graduated from U-M in May with a communication and media degree. Former baseball pitcher Ben Keizer: The lefty signed an undrafted free agent deal with the New York Yankees July 10, becoming the sev- enth member of the Wolverines' 2020 squad to ink with a professional club. The Portage, Mich., native's eight appearances out of the bullpen led U-M this past season, with the southpaw picking up one save and finishing with a 1-1 record and a 4.35 ERA in 10.1 innings pitched. Keizer was also a vital part of the Wolverines' 2019 success that culminated with a run to the College World Series, appearing in 34 games with a 4-1 record, two saves and a 4.30 ERA in 44.0 innings. Ice hockey rising junior goaltender Strauss Mann: He was chosen as one of two team cap- tains July 10, with rising senior forward Jack Becker being the other. Mann will be just the fourth goaltender in Michigan history to serve as a captain, and the first to do so since Henry Loud 78 years ago in 1943. The Greenwich, Conn., native took home the 2019-20 Big Ten Goalten- der of the Year award after setting U-M single- season records for save percentage (.939), goals against average (1.85) and shutouts (six). Rising senior track/cross country runner Alice Hill: She was named to the Academic All- America second team June 25 by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Hill has compiled a 4.0 cumulative grade point average in her neuroscience and ecology, and evolu- tion and biodiversity majors. She has also taken home All-America accolades from an athletic standpoint as a member of the Wolverines' dis- tance medley relay each of the past two years. She was set to lead Michigan at the 2020 NCAA Indoor Championships before they were canceled, with all qualifiers being rewarded with All- American recognition nonetheless. — Austin Fox MICHIGAN Auto ACCessorIes #1239 - 2pc Vinyl Front Mat Set $49.95 + FREE S&H #1246 - 2pc Vinyl Utility Mat Set $37.95 + FREE S&H #1285 - 4pc Vinyl Mat Set (Includes 2 front & 2 utility mats) $74.95 + FREE S&H Best Value!
