16 OCT. 10, 2020 BLUE & GOLD ILLUSTRATED UNDER THE DOME ✦ GIMME FIVE Shutouts are rare, especially in today's college football. In the 39 years since Blue & Gold Illus- trated first published in 1981, Notre Dame has posted 18 shutouts, most recently 52-0 versus South Florida Sept. 19. Rarer still is putting up that goose egg defen- sively while also eclipsing at least 50 points your- self. Since the post-World War II era that began in 1946, that has occurred only four times, yet once apiece the past two years. In the pre-Knute Rockne days, pouring it on against an inferior foe was common, most no- tably Notre Dame's 142-0 victory versus Ameri- can Medical in 1905 (even though the game was shortened in the second half). The 1932 campaign even began with 73-0 and 62-0 whitewashes of Haskell and Drake. However, since 1946, here are the five most lopsided Fighting Irish victories while pitching a shutout. Rk. Opponent (Year) Score 1. Duke (1966) 64-0 2. Rutgers (1996) 62-0 3. Bowling Green (2019) 52-0 South Florida (2020) 52-0 5. Air Force (1977) 49-0 CHARTING THE IRISH CHAMPIONSHIP ODDS With Big Ten football coming back at the end of October, a few new horses are now back in the race for the college football na- tional championship, which has impacted the gambling odds, according to DraftKings' SportsBook. Notre Dame is now tied with Michigan, Wisconsin and Texas A&M at +4000 to win the title, and nine other teams are ahead of the Fighting Irish. The only team on the Fighting Irish 2020 schedule with stronger odds of winning the national championship is Clemson at +200. Notre Dame is slated to play the Tigers at home Nov. 7, and could also face them in the ACC championship game Dec. 19. Per DraftKings, Clemson has the best chance of winning it all, followed closely by Ohio State at +250 and Alabama at +400. Georgia has the fourth-lowest odds at +1200. DraftKings also lists championship odds for Notre Dame's other opponents: North Carolina at +10000, Pittsburgh at +12500, Boston College at +20000, Louisville at +25000, Wake Forest at +35000, Florida State at +50000, and Duke, Syracuse, Georgia Tech and South Florida at +100000.
