DECEMBER 2020 25 women's lacrosse head coach Jane Miller is inducted into the U.S. Lacrosse Hall of Fame. • 2003 — Women's golf starts competi- tion at the varsity level. • 2004 — Dawn Staley earns her third Olympic gold medal in women's basketball, which makes her the most decorated Olym- pic UVA alum in all sports, in both medals and gold medals. • 2004 — Women's lacrosse wins the program's third NCAA title and UVA's 13th overall national crown. The title made head coach Julie Myers the first person in women's lacrosse history at the NCAA Di- vision I level to win a title as a player and a head coach. She was a player on UVA's 1991 title team. • 2005 — UVA women's basketball alum Val Ackerman became the first female presi- dent of USA Basketball, a position she held until 2008. • 2008 — Former UVA head coach Deb- bie Ryan is inducted into the Women's Bas- ketball Hall of Fame. • 2010 — Rowing won the program's first NCAA title and UVA's 16th overall. • 2012 — Rowing won the program's second NCAA title and UVA's 18th overall. • 2012 — LAUREN PERDUE earned a gold medal as a member of the 4x200-me- ter freestyle relay at the Olympic games. She finished her UVA career in 2013 with 18 ACC championships, 16 All-America honors and was named ACC Swimmer of the Year in 2010, 2011 and 2013. • 2013 — UVA women's basketball alum Val Ackerman is named the commissioner of the Big East Conference, a position she still currently holds. • 2013 — Field hockey head coach Mi- chele Madison is inducted into the Na- tional Field Hockey Coaches Association Hall of Fame. She is one of nine field hockey coaches with more than 400 career victories. • 2014 — Women's tennis player Danielle Collins won the NCAA singles title as a sophomore. • 2015-16 — Women's swimmer Leah Smith won back-to-back NCAA titles in both the 500 freestyle and 1,650 freestyle. • 2015-17 — Field hockey's Tara Vittese becomes the first three-time NFHCA Na- tional Player of the Year. • 2016 — Women's tennis player Dani- elle Collins won the NCAA singles title as a senior. • 2016 — Women's swimmer Leah Smith (class of 2017) earned a gold medal as a member of the U.S. women's 800-meter freestyle relay team and a bronze medal as an individual in the 400-meter freestyle. The two medals in one single Olympiad are the most by any female Cavalier. • 2017 — CARLA WILLIAMS becomes the first Black female athletics director of a Power Five conference school. • 2019 — UVA alums Morgan Brian, Becky Sauerbrunn and Emily Sonnett, as well as cur- rent women's soccer head coach Steve Swan- son, were part of the U.S. Women's National Team's 2019 FIFA Women's World Cup victory. • 2019 — Julie Myers led the UVA women's lacrosse program to its 24th-straight NCAA appearance, a feat matched by no other Division I coach in the same period. • 2020 — Palmer Park opens for the UVA softball program. Palmer Park, named after for- mer Cavalier pitcher Lisa Palmer, is the first UVA athletics competition site named for a former fe- male student-athlete at Virginia. • 2017 — Virginia adds its 14th women's sport with the addition of squash.
